A complete iron medieval annular shoe buckle. It is extremely small in size with a simple pin wrapped around the hoop at one end. The metal is heavily corroded. Similar iron buckles have been found during excavations in London, most from mid-14th to mid-15th century contexts (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 59-61), although their chronology extends beyond this into the post-medieval period. Egan and Pritchard (ibid., 57) suggest that buckles of this period with a diameter or 20mm or less are probably from shoes. Diameter: 12.12mm, thickness: 4.17mm, weight: 0.63g

A worn and corroded iron annular buckle frame of probable Medieval or later date. It has an annular frame that is circular in section. Hinging around the frame is a separately cast iron pin that is rectangular in form, oval in section, and has a rounded tip that is currently stuck to the underside of the frame due to post-depositional iron corrosion. The entire object measures 16.07mm in diameter, 3.10mm in thickness, and 1.54g in weight. This buckle frame is of probable Medieval date, c.14th-15th centuries AD, if not slightly later (as Egan and Pritchard, 1991: nos. 55, 72, 88).

A corroded iron buckle frame of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is square in form and section with a badly corroded, separately cast, iron pin folded around one side and tapering to a sharp point. The entire object demonstrates extensive signs of iron corrosion and encrustation. It measures 27.82mm in height, 27.71mm in width, 4.52mm in thickness, and weighs 7.69g. This buckle frame is similar to late Medieval and Post-Medieval examples noted in London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 430; Egan, 2005: no. 98), as well as Post-Medieval examples from Norwich (Margeson, 1993…

A complete iron buckle of probable Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. It has a D-shaped frame that is rectangular in section and with an integrally cast central bar. The frame is decorated on the front face with central oval shaped pin rest that has short double parallel diagonal grooves to either side. Additionally, double parallel diagonal grooves run from the outer edge towards the integral bar, with similar but shorter grooves at the corners of the frame. Either side of the bar are double vertical grooves. The bar itself is rectangular in form and section, with elaborate decorat…

An incomplete iron buckle of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is D-shaped in plan, square in section, with a flattened and expanded outer edge that is incomplete due to old breaks. The inner edge has a slight constriction where the now missing pin would originally have hinged, but the surfaces have suffered from extensive corrosion making the identification of any other decoration or distinctive features impossible. The buckle measures 35.80mm in height, 28.57mm in width, 3.93mm in thickness, and weighs 3.54g. This buckle is similar to examples from Medieval to Post-Medieval Winc…

Large buckle with iron oval frame and copper alloy sleeve or plate doubled over pin bar. The frame is or was approximately semicircular or D-shaped, with a straight pin-bar, about 26.5mm from top to bottom and 20mm across the loop. The pin is missing, and the frame is folded back against the side of the plate and held there by its encrustation of oxides. The bronze plate is 28.5mm long and 17mm wide, and the two leaves, which gape owing to the corrosion between them, are fastened at the trailing edge by a single large rivet, apparently of iron. The bronze sheet is cut fairly crudely, th…

Small iron buckle formed of a split loop turned into a circle, with a pin of strip iron rolled onto the thinnest part of the hoop. The iron rod of the hoop is 3mm thick, and the hoop itself is 17mm high and 14mm across (as the pin falls). The pin is made of strip iron 3mm wide and 2mm thick. In context and form the object should probably be considered middle Anglo-Saxon.
