A complete cast copper-alloy spur buckle dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The buckle consists an oval single-looped frame with an integrally cast sub-triangular plate, which is now somewhat distorted. A small aperture in the front edge of the plate creating a strap-bar for a wound wire pin (still preserved in-situ). The front edge of the plate has two decorative transverse ridges, in the middle of which is an in-situ dome headed rive intended to secure the buckle/plate to a strap. Behind this, the plate tapers along its length to its terminal, which is trilobed and demonst…

A fragment of a copper-alloy buckle frame of the medieval to post-medieval period. Only a small section from a rectangular frame buckle, likely to originally of double-frame. However, only one corner survives making precise identification difficult. It is of rectangular section and the upper surface is decorated. The decoration is incised with single lines running parallel to the edge. Between these two border lines there are a repeated pattern of three parallel lines running diagonally. It is likely to date from the fifteenth or sixteenth century. It is very similar to Egan and Pritc…

A copper-alloy buckle frame of the medieval period. Oval-shaped buckle with integral plate. The buckle loop is of 'D-shaped' section and has a small semi-circular projection on its outer edge where there is a pin rest. There is a rectangular plate which narrows towards the attachment end. There are two rivets holes running down the centre longitudinally with large, circular, cooper-alloy rivets within them. There is a circular hole for the attachment of the pint but it is absent. There is iron staining surrounding this suggesting that it was possibly an iron pin. It is similar to thos…

An incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate of the medieval period. Roughly rectangular in plan with a thin, rectangular section. Two rectangular broken loop protrusions are present, for the pin. Five intact iron rivets secured the buckle plates. These are arranged with one in each corner in addition to one in the centre. It is unclear whether there is decoration as the surface is quite corroded. It is likely to be of thirteenth or fourteenth century date. There are parallels in Egan and Pritchard (1991), p. 111. It measures 36.24mm in length, 21.14mm in width, 3.05mm in thickness and wei…

Copper-alloy medieval buckle. Broken buckle frame of Meols type 2. 'D-shaped' form with an offset bar that has been broken off. Outer/upper surface is decorated with incised wavey lines. The knops at either end of the bar appear to be decorated with small incised straight lines. There is evidence of gilding over the whole object, or perhaps just within the incised decoration (where it survives). Somewhat similar to Egan 1991, no. 277 but without the pin notch and more elaborately decorated. 18.32 x 29.30 x 2.83mm, 2.76g.

Copper-alloy medieval to post-medieval buckle. The plate is folded and is rectangular on one side but narrows in a triangular fashion on the other side. there is a rivet hole on th rectangular plate but the triangular one is broken before the end where the hole would be. The frame is 'D-shaped' but slightly unusual as it curves inwards a little at the mid-point of the 'D'. The pin is broadly triangular, tapering to a fine point from a wide base. The rectangular plate has been folded over, so that it touches the frame, and has corroded to it. This makes an accurate measurement of the l…

Copper-alloy medieval buckle. 'D-shaped' frame with an integral plate. The frame is similar to Meols type 6 with simple incised decoration on the wider outer edge. The plate is broken but would have been rectangular in shape. There is a collar to the plate with a hole for where the pin would have been seated. The plate has evidence of openwork decoration, probably at least two rectangles parallel to the side edges. The plate was afixed with rivets as one rivet hole remains, between the pin hole and openwork decoration on the plate. There is iron corrosion around this hole but it does …

Copper-alloy late medieval or post-medieval buckle. Sub-rectangular in form with slightly bevilled edge. The outside edge of the buckle has a square raised area that extends to all of the outer surfaces in the centre of the bar, where the notch would normally be expected. On the internal surface on the two sides are small triangular knops. These present a straight edge to the outer edge and an angled one to the inside edge. The buckle has been badly bent but is whole. The date is uncertain but is probably within the range of fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. 21.28 x 18.51 x 1.90mm, 1.80g.
