An incomplete lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's badge. The badge survives in two halves with parts of its outer edge and inscription missing. It was probably initially sub-oval in form, but its missing pieces make the shape of the outer edge difficult to determine. In the centre of the outer face there is a moulded crowned figure draped in robes holding a sceptre in its right hand with raised left hand. This is surrounded by an inscription reading [SI]GILL[...]ARGA[...]B.REG. The saint depicted may be suggested to be Margaret of Scotland - see Prosser and Webley (2021, 46, illus. 1) fo…

An incomplete lead or lead alloy medieval or early post-medieval pilgrim's badge. It is lozenge-shaped with a long strip attached to the reverse and folded flat against it, which was probably used for attachment. The front is decorated with a line of raised dots around the outside and a seated figure wearing long robes in the centre, probably Henry VI. The tip of one end is missing, but the item otherwise survives in fairly good condition. A lozenge-shaped badge depicting Henry VI standing is illustrated by Spencer (1998, 190, no.208a) and a small number of similar badges depicting…

An Incomplete cast lead-alloy object, possibly a fragment from a pilgrim badge of Medieval date. The surviving fragment is flat, rectangular in form with slightly concave sides and terminates at the top and possibly along one side in old breaks. It appears to have moulded decoration depicting a standing figure with long robes defined by multiple vertical ridges that converge towards the now missing head end. Towards the one incomplete(?) side the folds of the sleeve or robe are defined by multiple short diagonal lines. The back face of the object is undecorated but has a central, vert…

The exterior edges have the remains of a worn and slightly damaged beaded border, within which is an inner border consisting of two raised circumferential bands. A crude, cast circular lead-alloy pilgrim badge probably of early 16th century date, measuring 17.70mm in diameter. It has a border of three concentric circles, the outer one is formed of small pellets and within this is a circle of larger pellets and then finally a circle of small pellets within this. In the centre is the standing facing figure of Henry VI holding the orb and sceptre. On the reverse there is an integral pin and clasp. This badge is similar in style to a slightly larger one from London, which also has a pellet border and the same basic central figure; it was excava…

Lead-alloy pilgrim's badge depicting St Andrew, now bent in half. An upright rectangular plaque, it has a surviving projection at one lower corner that would originally have extended to a stitching loop; the other three corners are broken. St Andrew is in the centre of the plaque, wearing a striped or pleated gown drawn in at the waist; his limbs are splayed as if attached to an X-shaped cross. He faces the observer, but his face is very crude indeed with two large round eyes, a round nose and two large straight lips filling the whole of the space. The arms emerge from the gown to…

One corner is incomplete, and the other three show slight expansion towards their missing attachment loops; otherwise the badge is complete. It is decorated with a central motif of St Paul (with a pointed beard and bald forehead) on the left, and St Peter (with a rounded beard and curly hair) on the right. Both saints are nimbed and dressed in flowing robes, and both hold their symbol obliquely in their outer hand. Rectangular form with protruding circular attachment lugs at each corner. The front surface is decorated with a crudely executed figure of a crucified human figure wearing a girdled tunic. Identified as a Scottish issue of Saint Andrew by comparison with a parallel from London (Spencer 1998, no. 265). The rectangular shape, with stitching rings, has more in common with Continental than with English badges.
