An incomplete large iron key which could be medieval in date. The bow is missing the stem is complete and the bit also survives, although due to corrosion it is unclear if this is complete or not. It measures 110.86mm in total length and the stem is 15.85mm in width, the bit is 38.66mm in width. The stem has a circular section and is hollow at the bit end. The bit projects at right angles from the underside of the stem and then has one rectangular tooth, which may be incomplete.

a probable Roman iron double spiked loop.It has been bent at right angles into an L-shape, with a loop, filled with corrosion at one terminal and the two arms terminating with spiked ends. The arms are separate from each other but corroded together. The object measures 57.36mm in length, from loop terminal to the right-angle bend, and is 21.12mm wide across the loop. The arms are 6.56mm and 6.84mm in width, and the object weighs 33g. Whilst it ressembles double spiked loops from Hatcheston (Blagg et al, 2004, nos 291 etc) it does seem to be deliberately bent in half, unlike the others…

Two substantial cast fragments from an iron cauldron of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, with a combined total weight of 207.70g. The first is an irregular fragment, which is approximately triangular in shape, from the rim of the vessel that preserves one handle. The rim is everted with a flattened top edge and a transverse moulded ridge along the outer edge. On the outer face there is a second parallel moulded ridge approximately half way down the fragment, with traces of a similar, third ridge at the base of the sherd. The small cast handle is round in section and triangular in s…

A very worn and corroded iron horseshoe of probable Medieval date. It is almost complete but is missing the exterior edge from one branch as well as all but one of the nails due to old breaks. The shoe has a relatively broad web measuring 22.45mm in width and 9.70mm in thickness towards the toe, with a rounded and slightly thickened toe end. Each branch narrows to approximately 10.05mm in width at the calkin ends and the shoe appears to have folded calkins of Clark's type C. Each branch has three nail holes seemingly formed from countersunk rectangular slots with central perforations t…

A corroded iron buckle frame of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is square in form and section with a badly corroded, separately cast, iron pin folded around one side and tapering to a sharp point. The entire object demonstrates extensive signs of iron corrosion and encrustation. It measures 27.82mm in height, 27.71mm in width, 4.52mm in thickness, and weighs 7.69g. This buckle frame is similar to late Medieval and Post-Medieval examples noted in London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 430; Egan, 2005: no. 98), as well as Post-Medieval examples from Norwich (Margeson, 1993…

An incomplete iron knife of probable Post-Medieval date. Part of the triangular tang survives intact, but is heavily corroded and missing much of its extremities. The tang is separated from the remains of the integrally cast blade by an oval shaped copper-alloy collar that is rectangular in profile and would have served as a stop for the now missing handle. The blade itself is mostly incomplete, but what does survive is rectangular in profile and triangular in section, narrowing to the blade edge of the knife and with a flat back. This fragment measures 52.10mm in length, 16.72mm in he…

An iron object, probably a bolt or screw, of uncertain date. It has a square head and tapering rectangular shaft that is square in section. Approximately half way down the shaft expands on one side, but this may be the result of corrosion or encrustation. Towards the base of the shaft there is a large square projection that in form resembles a rove or bolt through which the shaft passes. An incomplete iron object, possibly a bridle fitting or similar, of uncertain date. It comprises a central bar that is square in section and rectangular in form. At each end are the remains of projecting loops, one of which is complete and is formed by the end of the bar being elongated and curved around to meet the main shaft, thus forming the loop. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small iron object of uncertain form, probably agricultural in nature, and highly corroded and encrusted. It is circular in section with two prongs forming a U-shaped plan, with a further short prong extending backwards from one end. The precise form and function of the original object are uncertain due to the poor preservation of the object and the extensive encrustation covering all surfaces. The fragment measures 31.73mm in length, 34.24mm in width, 9.81mm in thickness, and weighs 18.48g. This object is probably agricultural in nature but is of uncertain Roman or later date.
