Object type: CHAPE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of an iron probable late medieval to early post-medieval scabbard chape. Only the lower end of the object survives. This is a cast, hollow flat triangular chape with a jagged break around its upper edge and a flattened globular terminal projecting from its lower end. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. Scabbard chapes are more commonly made from sheet metal, but cast examples in copper alloy and iron are known. Compare PAS records: PUBLIC-03A532, LON-0444D0 and WMID-C808A3. It seems likely to be of late medieval to early post-medieval date. Le…

An incomplete wrought iron medieval barbed and socketed 'broadhead' arrowhead. The surviving section of the blade is triangular in shape with straight sides and lozenge-shaped cross-section. One side of the inner end projects into an incomplete barb, whilst the one on the other is largely missing. A deep groove runs along the joints between the blade and socket on either face. The socket is circular in cross-section and expands slightly towards its outer end. A longitudinal fold runs along one side of the socket from manufacture. The surface o…

A complete probable Early Medieval iron knife dating to circa AD 500-1000. It is a whittle-tanged knife. The tang is rectangular-sectioned and tapers gently from a maximum width of 9.44mm at the junction with the blade to 5.4mm at its terminal. The blade is broadly straight-backed though there is an element of thickening at the shoulder, likely caused by corrosion rather than design. The knife becomes convex curving towards the tip. The cutting edge is slightly curved at the tip from the straight back and gently flares outwards from a width of 7.2mm to the maximum width of the bla…

The scrolled ends contain central apertures. The item is heavily corroded and no discernible decorative element is visible on each face. Other Early Medieval examples can be inlaid and decorated with stylised bird heads. The scrolled ends may be part of a zoomorphic design. The item is similar in form to LIN-EF72D9 and examples depicted in West 1998: pg 195, nos 13-15. In the record of the form it is noted…

An incomplete iron medieval socketed 'broadhead' arrowhead. Both sides of the blade are missing leaving its original form unclear. A low, rounded mid-rib runs down the centre of both faces of the blade, expanding to develop into an elongated circular cross-sectioned socket at its inner end. The socket is c.18.00mm in length and c.10.5mm in diameter. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. This is probably one of Jessop's (1997, 2) 'early multi-purpose forms', which he suggests date mainly to the 11th to 14th century AD (ibid.). In the LMMC catalogue (1967) ty…

An incomplete fragment originating from an iron rowel spur of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, c. 1300-1700. Only the circular-sectioned neck of the spur survives, with the six-pointed copper-alloy 'rowel' still preserved in-situ. The rest of the object, consisting the arms of the object, is broken away in old damage. Preserved completely corroded and in relatively poor condition, the spur survives to a length of 41.50mm, 10.66mm thick at its midpoint, and c. 30.34mm in width at the widest point of the rowel. It weighs 13.83g. Ellis (in Clark, 1995, p. 147) notes that rowels of this …

An incomplete iron spearhead dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 500-650 AD. The spear is lanceolate, missing parts of its blade and tip as well as the lower section of the socket- though is otherwise preserved relatively complete. The cleft socket is circular in section and tapers towards its junction with the blade, demonstrating a triangular cut-out section on one side, in which can still be viewed fragments of semi-mineralised wood. The socket neck is short and solid, expanding outwards again and tapering into a blade of probable leaf-shaped original form, the central midrib o…

An incomplete iron Seax or long knife dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 450-600 AD. The object is single edged, with a triangular-sectioned blade that thickens at its upper edge and curves down towards its point, giving it a humped appearance. The tang is triangular in form and follows the centre line of the blade, though the presumably organic handle is now missing. Preserved in fair condition with the original surface now mostly obscured by corrosion products, the seax measures c. 345mm long, 17.50mm thick at the midpoint of the tang, 42.49mm thick at the midpoint of the blade…

An incomplete and heavily corroded iron rotary key dating to the Medieval period, c. 1270-1400. The exact form of the bow is uncertain, though the shank is rectangular in section and narrows above the projecting bit, the upper section of which is circular-sectioned and tapers to a rounded tip. The bit itself is heavily damaged and corroded, though its form probably consisted originally of three separate clefted bars. Preserved in poor condition, it survives to a length of c. 137mm, 8.63mm thick at the midpoint of the shank, and a maximum of 28.55mm thick between the shank and survivin…

Two fragmentary iron ingots or probable post-medieval to modern date. One ingot is broken into three pieces and the other two, but together these appear to comprise complete objects. Both are flattened, roughly rectangular with rounded corners. One has an irregular surface on one face, which is pitted with multiple holes. These are probably the voids left behind by organic material and suggest that the ingots were crudely maufactured. The metal is hard a brittle, as evidenced by the multiple cracks and fractures seen on both. The surface of the metal is an oxidised red-brown. The …
