Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a primary flake of translucent dark brown flint. The proximal end is missing, snapped off. It is sub-rectangular with a rounded distal end. The dorsal face is covered with cortex. There is slightly invasive, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch on the right side and sporadically on the distal end. It is 31.2mm long, 25.5mm wide and 5.5mm thick. 4.8g.

A flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of translucent dark brown flint. It is D shaped in plan with removal scars covering the dorsal face. All the edges have short, stepped, abrupt retouch. The flint seems thin for a scraper, but the abrupt retouch rules out a shaper implement such as an arrowhead or cutting tool. The flint is 19.9mm long, 16.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 1.3g.

A flint object of uncertain form or function. It is struck from a mottled grey flint and is roughly oval in form with a pointed oval cross section. One end has had transverse flake removal producing a flattened platform with visible incipient cones of percussion. Along both sides of the object are multiple crude and uneven flake scars, while the surviving complete end has a crushed or battered appearance. This perhaps points to either the survival of parts of the original exterior surface of the flint nodule, or the object suffering from (possibly deliberate?) damage or crushing to th…

A struck flint lithic implement of uncertain type. The object is a roughly triangular natural flake with hinge fracture at the broadest end, the flint being a mottled grey/brown in colour. At the pointed end one face has several irregular and low angled flake scars. Both edges have crude short, scaled and abrupt retouch resulting in relatively blunt edges. The entire object measures 76.34mm in length, 49.61mm in width, 9.33mm in thickness, and 35.44g in weight. The precise function of this object remains uncertain. The retouch is crude, but seemingly deliberate, although precisely …

An unpatinated struck flint implement of uncertain form, possibly an ovate or a roughout for an axe or similar implement. It is struck from a mottled pale grey flint and is of crude handaxe form with pointed oval cross-section, tapering in profile at both ends. The object has very crude bifacial working, although some of the flakes, particularly at each end, may well be the result of damage rather than deliberate striking of the flint. It measures 114.88mm in length, 66.28mm in width, 27.19mm in thickness, and 165.80g in weight. This is a flint object of uncertain function. It is p…

An unpatinated short flake struck from a dark brown flint. It is snapped at the distal end, and has a very small striking platform with two parallel flake scars on the ventral face removing the bulb of percussion. The ventral face has extensive ripples, while the dorsal face remains covered in thick white cortex. This flake measures 30.53mm in length, 28.95mm in width, 6.81mm in thickness, and 6.19g in weight. This is a primary flake removed from the original flint nodule, presumably intentionally. It could be of any date within the later Prehistoric period, c.4000-1 BC.

An unpatinated short flake struck from a dark brown flint. It is snapped at the proximal end, has a hinge fracture at the distal end, and retains cortex covering the entire dorsal face. At the proximal end where the flake snaps there is limited semi-abrupt scaled retouch at the dorsal edge. This flake measures 30.05mm in length, 27.51mm in width, 8.70mm in thickness, and 8.04g in weight. The date range of this flake is uncertain, and it may well be a natural flake that has been subject to limited later retouch. It is likely to be of later Prehistoric date, c.4000-1 BC.

A very small flint flake of uncertain later Prehistoric date. It is struck from a pale grey flint with slight bulb of percussion, flake scars on the dorsal face, but no obvious sign of retouch. The flake measures 18.23mm in length, 9.07mm in width, 1.94mm in thickness and 0.33g in weight. This appears to be a small flake of uncertain later Prehistoric date, perhaps c.10,000-800 BC.
