An early Medieval lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from AD 850-1000. It has a flat base with a domed and slightly flattened apex and a central hole of 9.3mm in diameter. The object is 27.0mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and weighs 45.79g. The whorl has a mid-grey patina.  A similar example is SWYOR-057095. Form A1 whorls are known from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole (over 9mm) makes a late Saxon date more likely.

A flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of translucent dark brown flint. It is D shaped in plan with removal scars covering the dorsal face. All the edges have short, stepped, abrupt retouch. The flint seems thin for a scraper, but the abrupt retouch rules out a shaper implement such as an arrowhead or cutting tool. The flint is 19.9mm long, 16.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 1.3g.

A late Medieval, or perhaps Post Medieval, silver gilt circular reliquary pendant depicting the lamb of God holding a cross (Agnus Dei) on one face and the Holy Christogram 'ihc' on the other face, probably dating from about AD 1350 - 1500. The pendant is constructed of two flat circular discs both of which are soldered to a separate rim or collar. The 'ihc' face has separated at the join and is pushed backwards into the body of the pendant, suggesting nothing is contained within the pendant, as there is no longer any void between the discs.  The A…

A copper-alloy strainer or skimmer of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1250 - 1700). The strainer is formed of a disc of copper-alloy sheet metal which has been perforated by hand from the reverse using a variety of different shaped puches for the holes. A copper alloy probable pin of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Modern. It is a slender rod of copper alloy, circular in cross-section and broken at the pointed end. The head end has a slight projecting collar 14mm from the end, and then tapers with faceted (hammered?) sides to the end which has a slightly wider disc or thickened end. It seems likely that the pin once had a separate decorative head of a disserent material, which threaded onto the faceted tapering area, held in place by the two thickened areas, perhaps a glass bead or hollow metal head. The thickened end of the hea…

An unidentified Post Medieval object. It consists of a dome which is pointed oval in plan. The dome is hollow and at one end is extends into a bar of rectangular section which bends back beneath the dome and terminates in a bifurcated break, perhaps where the was originally a hole or a slot. There is a narrow raised line round the edge of the dome and along the edge of the bar, but it fades out at the bend. The border is not interrupted at the other end of the domed area, indicating that there was never a matching bar there. There is a large circular hole in the apex of the dome. The …

A Medieval cast copper alloy seal matrix of conical form. It has a faceted hexagonal shaft with a circular suspension loop. The design shows a bear walking right and the legend reads: " *TOVMBEBOSSE". Though the letters are quite clear, it is not easy to understand what this means. A similar seal matrix is NLM-359707 which has a mouse instead of a bear and again, has a legend which is not understood. Circular, non-personal seal matrices became common from 1300 onwards, with the legend and device often forming a witty partnership (Harvey and McGuiness). This example is probab…
