Incomplete unidentified copper-alloy object of unknown date. It is long, narrow and broadly rectangular, although it tapers in width very gradually and very slightly from one end to the other. It is rectangular in cross-section. It has a gentle curve which can be observed when viewing either of the narrow faces and which becomes more pronounced towards the narrower end. It is unclear whether there is a break at this end but if so it is not recent. The broad end certainly terminates in a break. There is a concavity here which suggests the break occurred across a circular or round…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small fragment of an unidentified object of uncertain but probably Roman to early-medieval date, made of sheet copper-alloy and decorated on one face with stamped or punched ring-and-dot motifs. It is roughly trapezoidal, with two long tapering edges, a straight edge joining these at the narrow end and an irregularly-shaped edge, which is more clearly an old break, at the wide end. It has become slightly bent along a transverse line near the middle, and a strip of surface metal has been lost along that line on both faces. The ring-and-dots seem to be randomly placed, although th…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy penannular ring of uncertain date. The hoop is sub-triangular in cross-section, having a wider flat internal face and two equally narrower and concave external faces. The terminals are fairly rounded by wear. There is no trace of the gold coating that is normal in Middle to Late Bronze Age rings. The metal is patinated pale green, with an overlying layer of pale yellowish green. Similarly shaped rings in copper-alloy on this database, also of uncertain date, include BUC-251D11 and SF-2A1951. Gold or gold-covered Bronze Age examples include SUR-EFB639 and SUSS-5EA230. …

Unidentified and probably incomplete copper-alloy object of unknown date. It consists of a rectangular element measuring 8.0 x 5.8 x 2.6mm, which is longitudinally convex (thinner at the narrow ends) and moulded with relief decoration on one face and flat on the reverse. An integral, straight, oval-cross-sectioned rod projects 8.1mm from the centre of one of the long edges. It projects at ninety degrees to that edge but on a plane that deviates from that of the rectangle by about ten degrees towards the flat face. It appears to terminate in a worn break. The image depicted by the…

Head and neck of an animal figurine, apparently a dog, of unknown date. It is made of lead and may be a model for a finished version in a more durable material. It begins with a worn transverse break across the neck, which is oval (near circular) in cross-section. It soon expands in thickness and nearly twice as much in width to form the head. The head is long and sleek, with prominent cheekbones and triangular outward- and rearward-pointing ears. The top of the cranium is vaguely lozenge-shaped and the eyes are suggested by hollows between the forward end of this and the cheekbones. T…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified copper-alloy object of unknown age. It is sub-circular, of fairly uniform thickness and slightly dished. It appears to be complete as there is no evidence of breaks. Close to one side there is a perfectly circular area, approximately one third of the total, which is flat. Beyond this it curves concavo-convexly in all directions all the way to the edge. On the generally convex face, the flat circle is covered with multiple very fine concentric and perfectly circular grooves and ridges. The outermost ridge is wider and expanded at one point to form a wide and short triangle…

“Tally stone”, marked on a water worn pebble of mid-grey slightly banded, fine grained siltstone, in good sunlight, very, very fine specks of mica are visible within the stone. The twenty tallies are cut in to the lateral edge on the straighter of the two sides, they are a V cut with either a file (or similar) or cut with a sharp blade, the edges of which have rounded off slightly over the years and they appear to be a non-recent addition to the surface of the stone.
