Probably miscast fragment of a possible Late Roman copper alloy buckle frame (25 x 15mm, 2mm thick. Weighs 2.62g), broad flat-sectioned fragment of the possible shoulder of a frame with a horses head in profile projecting from the outside edge. Parts of the possible breaks are smooth. An engraved line defines the division of neck and mane on one face. See Hawkes and Dunning (1963). c. AD 250-409.

Medieval copper-alloy spur buckle with integral plate. It tapers in width from the outside edge of the frame to the opposite tip of the plate. The frame is D-shaped (flat outside edge) and almost plano-convex in cross-section (more or less flat internally). There is a very short, rectangular-cross-sectioned element projecting outward, not centrally, from the outside edge. On the plate, just beyond the inside edge of the frame, there is a sub-circular element, which is convex at the sides and concave on the reverse. It is perforated and currently has a short piece of iron protrudi…

Incomplete and slightly distorted medieval copper-alloy buckle frame with an expanded outside edge and a central constriction for a missing sheet-metal roller. Similar to Egan and Pritchard (2002), No. 317. The outside edge, including the constriction, is sub-oval in cross-section: flat on the reverse and convex on the external edge and front face. The narrower shoulders of the frame commence parallel to and inward of the non-constricted ends of the outside edge. A short straight groove divides and distinguishes these at each end and on both faces. One of the shoulders extends o…

Incomplete long and narrow medieval object, possibly part of a buckle pin, with an animal-head terminal at one end and a worn break at the other. It is generally rectangular in cross-section, but bevelled on both sides of the front face for most of its length. The front is one of the broader faces and the only one that bears surface decoration. Viewed from the front or rear, the long edges are straight and parallel, and the non-broken (zoomorphic) end may have been relatively straight and perpendicular but is now rounded. Viewed from the side, the long edges are curved and nearly…

Fragment of copper alloy Medieval composite buckle frame with integral forked spacer. Oval frame with obtuse angled outside edge forming a shallow medial point. The back of the loop extends to form the beginnings of the forked spacer but is broken symmetrically after 7mm, probably where the slot began to widen. The pin is missing. Both extant faces of the spacer arms show evidence of where the missing soldered outer plates would have originally been attached. The buckle frame has a D-shaped cross-section with flat rectangular section spacer arms. Dark brown patina. Circa AD1350-1450.

Copper alloy Medieval to Post Medieval double-loop buckle frame with missing pin. The upper surface of both outer loops have moulded cusped grooves set radially on either side of a central recessed pin-rest. The strap bar is narrowed somewhat compared to the rest of the frame. Outer edges are slightly scalloped. Whitehead, R. Buckles 1250-1800 (1996) p58. No. 354. circa AD1450-1600. The buckle may well be from the same mould as Norfolk found NMS-824409.

Fragment of the front part of medieval buckle plate, consisting of a single copper-alloy sheet retaining two dome-headed rivets in situ. It is likely to have originally been rectangular or sub-rectangular but is now an irregular shape due to breaks on all edges that are not recent. There are two projections on one side that would have folded around the bar of the frame but the folded part has broken away. Between these is a slot for the pin, and on the top and bottom are recesses for the frame. The rivets are arranged transversally: one at the top and one at the bottom. The plate…

Medieval copper-alloy rectangular buckle frame and pin. Each of the four sides of the frame is slightly different in width, but all are bevelled on the inner and outer edges on both faces. The pin is formed of a pointed strip of copper-alloy wrapped around one of the sides of the frame. It is free to move between all but the widest (one of the shorter) of the four sides. There are no marks or wear to indicate its correct position but it most likely belongs on the narrower of the longer sides, since it has more freedom to rotate there and is just long enough to reach the opposite side.…

Medieval or post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame with missing pin. It has symmetrical oval loops and a narrowed central bar. The loops are sub-triangular in cross-section: bevelled on the inner edges, convex and sloping on the front and flat on the reverse. The bar is trapezoidal in cross-section. It is also bent to one side, surely as a result of damage. The reverse exhibits a deep curved groove which crosses part of both loops. This is most likely a casting defect. Similar to Whitehead (2003) No. 293. Mid 14th to mid 17th century. Length: 37.0mm. Width: 25.4mm.…

Post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame with missing pin. It has symmetrical oval loops and a narrowed central bar with small knops at either end. Fragment of a medieval copper-alloy spur buckle. Triangular frame with notched projecting rectangular pin-rest at the centre of the straight outside edge. The two oblique sides of the triangle extend slightly beyond their junction with the third (the outside edge), but not beyond the pin rest. Opposite the pin-rest, there is a perforated semi-circular internal projection for the missing pin and an external perforated oval knop containing a fragment of an iron rivet. The buckle is broken here, at the springing of the integral narrowed plate, and the break is worn. Very similar to…

Incomplete medieval copper-alloy spur buckle with oval frame and integral plate, both of which are D-shaped in cross-section. The plate has two drilled perforations near the frame. One is the pin-hole and is empty. The other contains a corroded fragment of an iron rivet. The plate broadly tapers from the frame towards the attachment end. It is narrowest in the middle, where the sides are concave, then there is a slender transverse ridge before an expanded convex-sided knop. The plate then tapers further before terminating in a worn break. It is similar to Whitehead (2003) No. 196, but…

Very worn copper-alloy buckle of 15th- or 16th-century date. It is shaped like a five-petalled rose, with five long lobes separated by indentations forming a flattish circular frame. It has a central circular-section bar, and the lobes are arranged so that one forms the centre of one outside edge and the opposite outside edge has two meeting at its centre. Brown patina. Width 29mm, length 30mm, thickness of frame 1mm, weight 4.4g.

Post-medieval copper alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame. One loop is pentagonal both internally and externally and the other is oval with a straight edge. Rectangular lobes at the end of the bar are of different sizes and one is placed off-centre. This discrepancy and the straight edge suggest that the fettling process was not completed. Length 24mm. Width 18.4mm. Late 16th - 17th century.
