An incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is relatively small in size, sub-cordate in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. There is extensive working with a semi-hard hammer on both faces leaving none of the original surfaces of the blank visible. The edges are heavily abraded or 'rolled' and there is a small section missing to one side of the rounded end. Both surfaces are heavily patinated, but the internal dark grey flint is visible in places around the edges due to damage. There is orange iron staining on the high points of the flake scars …

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Secondary, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, hard hammer struck flake, in fresh condition but patinated brown with iron oxide concretions to the ventral face. The distal end and right lateral side (when viewed with from the dorsal face with the platform uppermost) is formed by original thermal (frost) fractures from the core. The left lateral edge is a hinged flake scar, the central face on this side appears to be a bi-polar flake scar, possibly produced by the anvil technique?  The slightly hooked distal edge (edge angle circa. 75 degrees) has fine use wear along its length with tiny fl…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of black and grey flint, now lightly patininated orange and white, the edges are broken at a steep angle resembling retouch, though this is later damage as they lack the same degree of patination. Three large flakes have been previously removed to the dorsal face, one overlaps another and looks like part of the same flake scar. The wide platform has four incipient cones of percussion from trying to remove this flake, the last one (very close to a previous blow) clearly "did the job". Thin, weathered cortex is extant to the distal end of the dorsal …

An ?incomplete flint crude handaxe or core tool of probable lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is crudely sub-cordate in shape and sub-oval in cross-section. It reaches a blunt point at one end, the tip of which may be incomplete. Bifacially flaked using a soft hammer with patches of finer working in places around the sides. A large chunk is missing to one side of the butt end with patches of fine retouch around this on one face suggesting that this may represent post-production damage. The flint is a mottled dark brown colour with patches of heavier patination and orange…

A flint handaxe of the Paleolithic period, dating to c. 300.000 - 40.000 BC. It is drop-shaped and pointed oval in cross-section. It is bi-facially worked from an orengeish cream flint core. The ventral face is slightly flatter than the dorsal face and has further scaled retouches on the curved edge. The dorsal face has an off-centred longitudinal ridge and invasive, scaled retouches made from different angles. Lenght: 61.94 mm Width: 52.41 mm Thickness: 29.29 mm Weight: 77.95 g

A complete flint lower paleolithic handaxe. It is crudely pointed in shape and has been created on a cobble with part of the cortex remaining on both faces. Bifacially worked using a hard hammer. The flint is an opaque mottled grey colour with a shiny patina. The edges are abraded or 'rolled' as is to be expected given its coastal findspot. With thanks to Dr Hannah Cutler for identification. A complete but highly weathered flint handaxe dating to the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 500,000-250,000 BC. It is broadly ovate in plan and sub-lenticular in section, demonstrating a reasonable degree of bi-lateral symmetry. Manufactured on a piece of flint which has now patinated a deep orangey tan colour, the butt-end of the handaxe demonstrates heavily abraded cortex, an additional small patch of which is present on one edge of the object. Both faces demonstrate covering secondary modification in the form of soft hammer removals which have served to completely remove the original suppor…
