A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe. Pointed in shape and bifacially worked with a small patch of cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The face without the cortex is more heavily patinated and all surfaces are iron stained. The edges are rolled and the pointed tip is particularly abraded. Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 112.87mm, width: 73.86mm, thickness: 37.81mm, weight: 302g

A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe likely to date to around 600,000 BC. Sub-cordate shape (Wymer (1999) Type E/D) with retouch mainly confined to the edges of both faces. There is a large patch of pebble cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The edges and surfaces are heavily abraded.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 121.53mm, width: 91.76mm, thickness: 29.11mm, weight: 340g

A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe. Small sub-cordate shape and bifacially worked with just a small amount of cortex remaining towards the butt end of one face. The flint is dark grey-brown in colour with light speckled patination that is heavier on the face with the cortex. A flint handaxe in sharp condition with all-over shallow bifacial retouch, very unifrom slightly pointed oval in shape. Unpatinated or stained and a dark brown/black flint with one plae grey patch near the tip. Length 99mm, width 77mm and maximum thickness is 24mm. This axe looks like a relatively recent product, however no obvious recent flake scar marks are visible, so it has probably been buried for some time. None-the-less its discovered position, only 15cm deep, suggests a re-deposition from an unknown context. It could therefore be modern and in the form of a middle Palaeolithic…

Two lithic implments, the first is a flake which is patinated and partially stained medium brown with slight retouch or use wear and is prehistoric in date. The second is a snapped long blade with steep edge retouch on one edge and relatively crude retouch on the other, shallower edge. It is sub-triangular in cross-section. The flint is grey and deeply stained medium and dark rusty brown this example is probably Upper Palaeolithic in date.

Secondary, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, hard hammer struck flake, in fresh condition but patinated brown with iron oxide concretions to the ventral face. The distal end and right lateral side (when viewed with from the dorsal face with the platform uppermost) is formed by original thermal (frost) fractures from the core. An incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is relatively small in size, sub-cordate in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. There is extensive working with a semi-hard hammer on both faces leaving none of the original surfaces of the blank visible. The edges are heavily abraded or 'rolled' and there is a small section missing to one side of the rounded end. Secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of black and grey flint, now lightly patininated orange and white, the edges are broken at a steep angle resembling retouch, though this is later damage as they lack the same degree of patination. It reaches a blunt point at one end, the tip of which may be incomplete. Bifacially flaked using a soft hammer with patches of finer working in places around the sides. Four flint flakes that are the result of flint working but that have not been worked into tools themselves. All have irregular chipped surfaces or wear which may have been caused by being on a beach at some point.
