Two lithic implments, the first is a flake which is patinated and partially stained medium brown with slight retouch or use wear and is prehistoric in date. The second is a snapped long blade with steep edge retouch on one edge and relatively crude retouch on the other, shallower edge. It is sub-triangular in cross-section. The flint is grey and deeply stained medium and dark rusty brown this example is probably Upper Palaeolithic in date.

A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe likely to date to around 600,000 BC. Sub-cordate shape (Wymer (1999) Type E/D) with retouch mainly confined to the edges of both faces. There is a large patch of pebble cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The edges and surfaces are heavily abraded.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 121.53mm, width: 91.76mm, thickness: 29.11mm, weight: 340g

A flint laurel leaf blade, probably of Neolithic, or possibly earlier, date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint that has a mottled orange/white patina. The object is ovoid in form, biconvex in section and bifacially worked, narrowing at one end but seemingly complete. Both faces have shallow but well controlled retouch formed from relatively large, shallow flakes with limited edge retouch at both ends and in areas of the sides/edges. A large flint handaxe of Palaeolithic date in the Acheulian tradition. It is sub-triangular in form with a pointed oval shaped cross section and struck from flint that has a stained medium to dark brown colour. The axe has a rounded tip with triangular butt end and heavy flake scars on all surfaces. It shows signs of having been rolled whilst in the ground. This axehead measures 186mm in length, 115mm in width, 52mm in thickness and weighs 989g. It is of Lower Palaeolithic date, c.500,000-40,000 BC.

A flint handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date, complete apart from a single flake removed from the base of one edge. It is pointed and sub-triangular and is only slightly rolled, though possibly partly through beach action. The rounded butt end has cortex remaining on part of it. The flint is irregularly stained with mixed pale to dark browns over varied pale to dark grey flint, which is exposed by the detached flake.

Ovate handaxe, broken at one end in antiquity. Glossy red/brown stained flint with a large number of coarse-grained inclusions. An old but thinly patinated chip indicates that the flint is probably pale grey in colour. One face is flaked all over; the opposed face is more than 50% cortex, which is thick but weathered, of a buff colour with black speckled staining. A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date. Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.

A complete flint lower to middle paleolithic cordate handaxe. It is leaf-shaped and roughly planoconvex in cross-section. Both faces are covered with shallow, invasive flaking and there are further patches of sub-parallel, long, low angle retouch along the edges on both faces. The flint is dark brown in colour with a glossy patina and there are patches of a hard silty deposit on one face. It survives in remarkably fine condition with fairly sharp edges and minimal damage.
