The butt end of an ovate or pointed hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date. The flint is dark grey in colour and has deep medium brown coloured staining on the surfaces and on the breaks, suggesting that the breaks are ancient. It has fine, shallow bifacial flaking on all surfaces leaving just three small areas of cortex visible. There is little evidence of rolling and no evidence of ploughmarks suggesting recent disturbance. The axe measures 96.31mm in length, 79.55mm in width, 30.35mm in thickness, and weighs 221.86g. This fragment is of Lower Palaeolithic date from between c.700,000 an…

An incomplete but large flint blade of Upper Palaeolithic to Neolithic date. It has a dark brown or grey flint that has been stained a variety of browns possibly due to deposition in a peaty soil. The blade is snapped at both ends, one of the breaks being modern and the other ancient, and has bifacial edge retouch. It measures 149.78mm in length, 52.40mm in width, 22.06mm in thickness, and weighs 153.15g.

An assemblage of 35 tertiary flint blades of possible final Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. All are struck from a grey/brown flint with blue/grey patination and have a combined total weight of 452.78g. These blades form part of a larger assemblage of flint blades, flakes, and tools, all found together on spoil excavated from a single pit during the construction of a soakaway. The complete assemblage finds close parallels to excavated long blade assemblages and industries in the surrounding landscape, most notably those recently published in the immediate vicinity at Brandon (E.…

A flint laurel leaf blade, probably of Neolithic, or possibly earlier, date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint that has a mottled orange/white patina. The object is ovoid in form, biconvex in section and bifacially worked, narrowing at one end but seemingly complete. Both faces have shallow but well controlled retouch formed from relatively large, shallow flakes with limited edge retouch at both ends and in areas of the sides/edges. It measures 133.48mm in length, 58.99mm in width, 14.10mm in thickness, and weighs 119.52g. The form of this object suggest it is probably a dagger …

A large flint blade core of possible Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic date. It is struck from a mottled dark brown flint that has had the exterior surfaces removed from all faces with the exception of traces of cortex on one side. A flint handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date, complete apart from a single flake removed from the base of one edge. It is pointed and sub-triangular and is only slightly rolled, though possibly partly through beach action. The rounded butt end has cortex remaining on part of it. The flint is irregularly stained with mixed pale to dark browns over varied pale to dark grey flint, which is exposed by the detached flake.

Ovate handaxe, broken at one end in antiquity. Glossy red/brown stained flint with a large number of coarse-grained inclusions. An old but thinly patinated chip indicates that the flint is probably pale grey in colour. One face is flaked all over; the opposed face is more than 50% cortex, which is thick but weathered, of a buff colour with black speckled staining. Dimensions: 124 mm surviving length, 85 mm wide and 30 mm thick. Condition: lightly rolled. Wymer does not list any Palaeolithic material from the immediate area, but gives examples of handaxes from Belton Common and Hopton-…

Middle Palaeolithic Levallois core, knapped from very high quality dark black flint. The core has two convex faces. The upper surface has a considerable amount of flakes removed, leaving a large amount of flaking scars and impact ripples on the surface. There are patches of natural mid-grey cortex surviving on the outer edges of this surface. The other face has a bulb of percussion and there is a hinged fracture along part of the outer edge. This surface has only been worked around the edge, the majority of the surface remaining smooth with the exception of a few small scars. There is …

Thin biface, slightly rolled. Slightly asymmetric with one side relatively thick and blunt, suggesting knife type implement rather than laurel leaf. Good quality all-over shallow flaking. Some patination and staining. This is difficult to date because of its rolled condition. This and its colouring gives it a Palaeolithic appearance though it could equally well be of Neolithic or Bronze Age date.
