A flint handaxe of the Paleolithic period, dating to c. 300.000 - 40.000 BC. It is drop-shaped and pointed oval in cross-section. It is bi-facially worked from an orengeish cream flint core. The ventral face is slightly flatter than the dorsal face and has further scaled retouches on the curved edge. The dorsal face has an off-centred longitudinal ridge and invasive, scaled retouches made from different angles. Lenght: 61.94 mm Width: 52.41 mm Thickness: 29.29 mm Weight: 77.95 g

A complete flint lower paleolithic handaxe. It is crudely pointed in shape and has been created on a cobble with part of the cortex remaining on both faces. Bifacially worked using a hard hammer. The flint is an opaque mottled grey colour with a shiny patina. The edges are abraded or 'rolled' as is to be expected given its coastal findspot. With thanks to Dr Hannah Cutler for identification. A complete but highly weathered flint handaxe dating to the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 500,000-250,000 BC. It is broadly ovate in plan and sub-lenticular in section, demonstrating a reasonable degree of bi-lateral symmetry. Manufactured on a piece of flint which has now patinated a deep orangey tan colour, the butt-end of the handaxe demonstrates heavily abraded cortex, an additional small patch of which is present on one edge of the object.
