An incomplete cast copper-alloy centre link from a three-link bridle bit of Iron Age date. Both of the loops are incomplete due to old breaks and the entire object is slightly twisted probably as a result to post-depositional damage. At the centre of the object is an oval moulding that is oval in section and has flat faces. From the centre of each face projects an integrally cast loop that is circular in form and oval in section, missing the outer edges due to old breaks. The object is undecorated but has a dark green patina that is slightly blackened in places. It measures 34.41mm in…

An incomplete cast copper alloy, two link bridle bit dating from the Iron Age to early Roman period. The bit consists of one end of the mouthpiece, with an incomplete heavy collared terminal perforation which terminates with a break. The simple cheekpiece rings would have been directly threaded through this perforation. The bit terminal has been decorated with by two converging incised lines, which start at the edge, and taper towards each other resulting in a central swelling. Below the collar is a hexagonal bar which is divided by four horizontal ribs which expand outwards in the …

Fragment of a cheek ring from a Late Iron Age to Early Roman three-link bit, broken, worn and corroded, with the opposed stumps of the missing ring projecing from the sides of the internally projecting solid cast pear-shaped body at the end of the remains of a broken club-shaped link head. The surviving portion measures 37 x 66mm. Compare with a more elaborate example illustrated in MacGregor (1976), Early Celtic Art in North Britain vol II, no. 3. A similar form has recently been found in Cheshire (PAS database, awaiting number; others listed at LANCUM-535083 and WMID-028CF4). 1st ce…

Incomplete three-link (also called 'double-jointed') bit, made of copper alloy and iron, in a very corroded and worn condition. The central element and one of the outer links survive, along with a small fragment of the other outer link. The complete outer link is 74 mm long, consists of an outer iron boss, then a transversely set loop which would have held a separate rein ring, then a double 'baluster' moulding, and lastly a ring which is linked to the central element. The iron boss survives surprisingly well. It is made from a washer 11 mm thick and 22 mm in diameter, with rounded…
