Bronze unit, some wear and some recent damage on the edge. Identifiable as VA 154-3 "Kentish uncertain", Hobbs 2484-2486 "uninscribed south-eastern bronze". Around 35 are listed on CCI database (http://www.writer2001.com/cciwriter2001/BritishLists/Cantii/Cantii_59.htm), the majority of located ones being from Kent and two from Essex (Tilbury, Maldon) - thus this eg is the farthest north found as yet.

Struck copper alloy coin (on a cast flan), copying a common type of Massilia (Marseilles). It is almost certainly struck on the Continent, most likely in Gaul. The earliest prototype issues of larger types date to the 3rd century BC (Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum, Copenhagen, Vol 43, no.731ff - 26-15mm in diameter). However, there were later issues of smaller diameter (c. 15mm) in the 2nd to 1st centuries BC which are also attributed to Marseilles (Ibid, no. 809ff). Copies of these coins have been identified on the Continent - De La Tour, Atlas de Monnaies Gauloises (1994 ed), no. 2242…
