A small and worn copper alloy coin with uncertain obverse and reverse types. The thickness of the flan and the high relief of the surviving design elements suggest this is probably Iron Age rather than Roman in date. It may have originally been a piece from a Trinovantian/Catuvellaunian bronze unit, although no obvious type has been identified. Alternatively, it may be the core of a contemporary gold stater or quarter stater forgery, the L-shaped decoration visible on one of the faces might be similar to an uninscribed British O (Geometric) quarter stater, c.65-45 BC (as Hobbs nos. 410…

It appears in the Celtic Coin Index (eg CCI 98.2053, 92.0231, 95.3459) with the wreath style compared to Allen types Q,L and the reverse horse to North Thames types. The recorded findspots are mostly in Essex.
