Small ovate biface, extremely rolled (beach find). Deep, shallow flaking, slight plano-convex form. Length 60mm, width 47mm, thickness 18mm, weight 61.2g. Thin biface, slightly rolled. Slightly asymmetric with one side relatively thick and blunt, suggesting knife type implement rather than laurel leaf. Good quality all-over shallow flaking. Some patination and staining. This is difficult to date because of its rolled condition. This and its colouring gives it a Palaeolithic appearance though it could equally well be of Neolithic or Bronze Age date.

A worked flint implement. A smallish flake with six flake scars on the dorsal face. Possibly with retouch along one edge, though this could be damage. It is stained and rolled, presumably glacially derived and of lower Palaeolithic date.

A heavily stained medium brown abraded worked flint blade. Measuring 88mm in length and 23mm in width this blade has extensive recent damage exposing a plae grey flint beneath the patina. It is most likely to have been either water abraded or a glacial erratic. It is Palaeolithic in date.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A unifacial plano-convex handaxe made on a large flake which remains without further retouch on the bulbous face. There is extensive all-over heavy flaking on the dorsal face. The flint is a motled brown due to staining, the surface is relatively glossy and the flake edges are all slightly rounded suggesting either rolling or wind/water abrasion. This handaxe is Lower Palaeolithic in date. Dr Kevin Leahy adds: the unifacial form of this implement suggests that it was made using the Levallois technique which would allow it to be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic.

Two lithic implments, the first is a flake which is patinated and partially stained medium brown with slight retouch or use wear and is prehistoric in date. The second is a snapped long blade with steep edge retouch on one edge and relatively crude retouch on the other, shallower edge. It is sub-triangular in cross-section. The flint is grey and deeply stained medium and dark rusty brown this example is probably Upper Palaeolithic in date.

A flint handaxe of lower Palaeolithic date, complete apart from a single flake removed from the base of one edge. It is pointed and sub-triangular and is only slightly rolled, though possibly partly through beach action. The rounded butt end has cortex remaining on part of it. The flint is irregularly stained with mixed pale to dark browns over varied pale to dark grey flint, which is exposed by the detached flake.

three prehistoric flint tools. 1) a deep brown patinated flint blade, with limited end retouch and slightly notched. It is 52.4mm in length and 18.80mm wide, broadening out to 31mm in width at the base. It weighs 7.36g. There is retouch and use wear along one edge, and there are parallel blade scars on the dorsal face. This blade probably dates to the Upper Paleolithic or Mesolithic periods. 2)an unpatinated black flake with 50% cortex, it is 36.98mm in length and 18.3mm wide, weighing 3.37g. Middle Palaeolithic Levallois core, knapped from very high quality dark black flint. The core has two convex faces. The upper surface has a considerable amount of flakes removed, leaving a large amount of flaking scars and impact ripples on the surface. There are patches of natural mid-grey cortex surviving on the outer edges of this surface. The other face has a bulb of percussion and there is a hinged fracture along part of the outer edge. This surface has only been worked around the edge, the majority of the surface remaining smooth with the exception of a few small scars. There is …

A flint handaxe in sharp condition with all-over shallow bifacial retouch, very unifrom slightly pointed oval in shape. Unpatinated or stained and a dark brown/black flint with one plae grey patch near the tip. Length 99mm, width 77mm and maximum thickness is 24mm. This axe looks like a relatively recent product, however no obvious recent flake scar marks are visible, so it has probably been buried for some time. None-the-less its discovered position, only 15cm deep, suggests a re-deposition from an unknown context. It could therefore be modern and in the form of a middle Palaeolithic…

The longblade has retouch along one edge, with smaller areas of retouch along the other edge and the distal end fracture. The retouch could be the result of re-utilisation at a later date.
