Philip de Jersey comments: Despite its rather unattractive appearance, this is an extremely interesting coin. It is only the third known example of a very late silver unit of Cunobelin, which I included in the article on Cunobelin's silver in Britannia 32 (2001). It is type F5 in there. As well as the example I listed (and illustrated) I have seen another one since, but they are the only others I know of. As such it is just the sort of thing that the BM (if they had any money) or a local museum ought to snap up, given the opportunity. I suspect it might clean up quite well. Given …

Good condition, unusual type? - obv not precisely paralleled in quick search. Images to go to John Davies and Philip de Jersey for further comment:.. Comment from JD, with input also from John Talbot, currently researching early Face-Horse types, follows: "Firstly, it is Early Face-horse A. Apparently there are a couple of other examples of this precise obverse type - but this is the best example - and probably the earliest of the dies. The reverse is a completely new variety. There are a couple of similar examples but nothing quite like this. Again, John thinks this is likely to be ea…

Icenian Boar Horse type, class C, "fairly standard example, probably late 1st century BC, perhaps between 30 and 10 BC ... the only variation on the type is prescence or absence of an 'eye' on the boar, split about 50/50... just visible on this one" (information from Philip de Jersey, Oxford coin index).

Small rather thick coin (diam 11.5mm, thickness varying c.1.8 to 2.5mm), slightly dished and almost certainly Iron Age. Metal probably silver but discoloured. The reverse makes most sense as a horse to right, in the style of Icenian Pattern-Horse types with a double mane and simplified body but the obverse has a couple of high relief spots which make no sense as an Iceni design. Perhaps heat damaged?
