A damaged and very worn medieval silver halfpenny or penny of long cross type, not further defined, dating to AD1279-c.1500 (Edward I - Henry VII). The coin is in very poor condition, missing parts of the outer edge and the design almost entirely illegible. The only element of the design which survives is part of the reverse showing a long cross dividing the inscription with pellets in each quarter. The inscriptions are illegible. The diameter of the coin (16 mm) suggests the coin is either a halfpenny of Edward I-III (1279-1351) or a later penny (probably Edward IV onwards). The weig…

An early medieval silver penny, a Danelaw imitation of Alfred of Wessex's (AD 871-99) London Monogram type dating to c.AD880-94, Mackay Danelaw Type A2 (imitating London Type A2; North 463). Silver cut halfpenny of Edward IV, First and Second Reign (1461-1470 & 1471-1483), an Archiepiscopal issue of the Archdiocese of York. The obverse bears the right hand side of the king's head facing with a key to the right of the neck, no mark on the breast and the inscription EDWARD.The reverse inscription reads CIVI/[TAS/EBO]/RACI which indicates the mint was Eboraci (York). Silver penny of Eadmund of East Anglia (855-870), moneyer Dudda, likely Ipswich mint, North 460. Only one other example is recorded on the EMC (1002.0423). This coin is different to that one in it's reverse inscription (only a slight variation) and the design pattern in the central field, with more than one pellet in the angles of the cross (John Naylor pers comm).
