A silver 'sovereign' penny of Henry VIII, (1509-1547). Reverse: CIVITAS LONDON; long cross over square shield, saltire stops between words. The first coinage with the initial mark a portcullis minted at London and dating to AD1509-1526. The coin has been pierced from the reverse through to the obverse through the head of the king. Note: Modified coins can come within the remits of Treasure Act 1996, and this includes all finds of pierced silver or gold coins up to AD 1180 and some thereafter depending upon the nature of the piercing.
