A complete probable Roman iron lamp dating to circa AD 43-410. It has a broadly circular chamber with vertical walls and a flat base. At one end, there is a broadly hemispherical spout. The hanger is rectangular-sectioned and loops inwardly. It terminates in a broadly circular knop with central, circular suspension loop. It is now heavily corroded.  A similar incomplete recorded under BH-706431. A similar example is also attested in a metalwork hoard recovered from a grave fill, recorded under BH-84CCFA. Another very similar example is accessioned at the British Mu…

An iron nail, possibly a hob nail of Roman date. It has a corroded dome-shaped head with integral square sectioned shaft that tapers to a blunt tip. The entire object measures 8.67mm in width/diameter at head, 4.35mm in thickness at head, 13.84mm in length including shaft, and 1.02g in weight. It finds parallels in Manning's Type 10 hob nails (Manning, 1985: pp. 136-137, fig. 32 no. 10, and is of probable Roman date, c.43-410 AD.

A complete iron Roman brooch of P-shaped type. At the head of the brooch is a separately cast iron axis bar, which has globular terminals and is held in place by the flattened head of the bow being folded around the axis bar. A separately iron spring chord and spring of at least four coils are coiled around the axis bar. To one side of the spring coils is a separate iron pin that is cylindrical in form, perhaps missing its tip due to old breaks, and coiled around the axis bar. This suggests the originaly pin may have broken, the surviving pin a replacement to enable the brooch to cont…

A possible worn and corroded iron spear, perhaps a pilum of Roman date. It has a tapering shaft that is cylindrical in section with an incomplete socket at the attachment end. At the terminal end the shaft tapers to a flattened blade, most of which is incomplete due to old breaks. This is sub-oval in form, perhaps tapering towards a pointed tip, but the precise shape remains uncertain given the preservation of the object. A large iron object, probably an anvil of possible Roman date. It is roughly rectangular in profile, square in section, tapering slightly towards one end. All surfaces have extensive corrosion and encrustation making close identification of both form and means of manufacture impossible. The entire object measures 230mm in length and 220mm in width at one end (base?), 190mm in length and 160mm in width at the opposite end (top?), and roughly 240mm in height. a probable Roman iron double spiked loop.It has been bent at right angles into an L-shape, with a loop, filled with corrosion at one terminal and the two arms terminating with spiked ends. The arms are 6.56mm and 6.84mm in width, and the object weighs 33g. Whilst it ressembles double spiked loops from Hatcheston (Blagg et al, 2004, nos 291 etc) it does seem to be deliberately bent in half, unlike the others…

A blacksmith-made iron object 50mm long by 31.5mm wide and 2.2mm thick. It consists primarily of an ovate or sub-circular plate 31mm in diameter with a central rivet or round-headed nail. The head is 8mm in diameter and the shank 4.5mm,and projects 9mm at the back of the plate. From one side of this plate a finger of iron 9mm wide projects 18mm, and on the opposite side a broader and thicker projection, which develops into a lateral prong (probably formerly a pair of prongs, before the object was corroded), rises at 90 degrees from the flat. Perhaps the most convicing explanation of th…

Heavily corroded iron knife-blade 80.5mm long and 12.00mm wide at the widest point. The thickness before corrosion appears to have been about 4mm. The knife has a straight squared back to the blade, which runs parallel to the cutting edge for about 55mm from the root of the tang, and then curves gently down towards the point. The cutting edge itself is perfectly straight. The tang is not present, nor its point of attachment visible, but seems most likely to have been continuous with the thicker part of the object, i.e. on the side of the squared back to the blade.
