Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead post-medieval cloth seal dating to the year AD 1664. Only one disc of an originally two-part seal survives. The outer face has the raised letters 'CAR/ SAY/ 1664' in three lines. There is a small break to one side where a strip would have projecting originally, attaching this to another disc. The lettering suggests that this is most likely to be aa clothier, weaver or searcher's seal. Egan (1995, vii) writes that 'stamped lead seals were widely used in the European textile industry during the late-medieval/early-modern period. They were att…

A complete, but damaged, copper-alloy late medieval to post-medieval composite pin. The head is made from two dished disc-shaped sections of sheet metal soldered together. A simple wire shank, tapering to a point at its lower end, is attached separately to the centre of the lower disc. The head feels heavy given its construction, suggesting that it may be filled with lead. The shank is bent at an angle and there is a small indentation to one side of the head. See parallels from excavations in  London (Egan 2005, nos. 221&224) suggesting a possible 15th-17t…
