An incomplete cast copper-alloy handle from a medieval cooking vessel, most probably a posnet or skillet dated from the later medieval to the early post-medieval period (c. 1400-1600 AD). The handle comprises a flat bar that widens towards the centre and narrows towards the end where it rounds off and is angled slightly downwards. The handle has broken at the widest point of the bar. The foot projects at a shallow angle below the main bar of the handle and narrows to a rounded terminus. Across the top surface of the handle, there is a line of ring-dot motifs.  The handle'…

Rectangular sectioned, it is comprised of a tapering projection with a stump for hinge loop on the back and a pair of integrally cast acorns projecting from either side of a lug on the top side. The tapering projection would have been soldered to the tankard lid. A similar example is recorded under SF-B6C295. Length: 42.7mm; Width: 22.9mm; Thickness: 5.9mm; Weight: 26.43g.

A fragment of the handle of a medieval to post-medieval chafing dish handle. Only the outer edge consisting of two adjoining curved sections remains. These are rectangular in cross-section. There is a break at either end where two straight sides would have attached. Chafing dishes were made from both metal and pottery and were used to contain hot charcoal to cook food or keep it warm at the table. This is of 16th or 17th century date.  Length: 46.31mm, width: 18.99mm, thickness: 5.09mm, weight: 9.94g

A incomplete lead vessel of probable late medieval or post-medieval date, probably an inkwell. It has a circular base, slightly outwards flaring walls and an everted substantial square rim. The metal is heavily pitted and corroded and there is damage around the rim in places. The object was quite probably an inkwell (see SWYOR-565A19), although may also have had other functions such as dice shaker and small holy water stoop. Length: 25.36mm, max diameter: 33.61mm, thickness: 5.01mm, weight: 80.73g

A copper-alloy post-medieval vessel repair. It consists of an irregularly shaped section of sheet metal with seven in situ copper-alloy rivets around the edges, each formed from a cone of sheet metal hammered flat. The object would have been used to repair a break in a larger vessel. According to Geoff Egan (pers. com.) conical rivets of this type are of post-medieval date (earlier ones are kite-shaped). Length: 47.94mm, width: 45.31mm, thickness: 3.45mm, weight: 9.83g

A copper alloy post-medieval cooking vessel leg. It is D-shaped in cross-section, tapering to a point at its lower end. The outer face has five logitudinal ribs, the central one more prominent. A fragment of the concave inner surface of the vessel remains attached to the upper end of the leg and its lower end is misshapen from wear. The surface of the metal is pitted with corrosion. This leg has features of Butler et al.'s (2009, 5-6) Type C and D, which date from the 16th to 19th century.  Length: 95.78mm, width: 53.20mm, thickness: 36.26mm

Two fragments from the rims of copper alloy post-medieval cooking vessels. Both come from vessels with slightly everted rims, which have each been repaired using sheet metal and flattened conical sheet metal rivets. The repair on one fragment is larger, folded over the rim itself with four rivets holding it in place. Cooking vessel such as this one were in use for a long period, first becoming common during the 13th and 14th centuries with little change in form well into the post medieval period (Butler and Green 2003, 27), but according to Geoff Egan (pers. com.) conical mends o…

A copper-alloy fragment of a vessel probably dating from the late Medieval to the Post- Medieval period. It has an irregular shape due to breaks all over the sides. A widthways straight groove divides the outer face of the object; the upper part is slightly recessed and has a curling outer edge creating a sort of rim. In the recessed part there are two copper-alloy rivets whose heads have been flattened in either faces; in between the flattened rivet heads and the outer face of the fragment are visible remains of the riveted metallic sheet; in the top left corner of the outer face the…

A possible copper-alloy fragment of a vessel probably dating from the late Medieval to the Post- Medieval period. The object is costitued of a main sheet of metal with irregular shape and frequent breaks in every side; the object has a convex outer side following a widthways bending in the middle of the sheet; that is considered to be given by the original and particular shape features of the vessel. Each of the shorter opposite sides of the main sheet have remains of circular piercing with the hole-rim slightly projecting outward. On the outer surface of the main sheet there were riv…
