A fragment of a flint core of the Mesolithic/early Neolithic period dating to 10,000-3,500 BC. It has a conical shape and has been manufactured from a dark grey flint; it has one oval striking platform from which run long, narrow and parallel blade removal scars down the observe face. The reverse face has a bulb of percussion, hence the item is a fragment of a larger original core. No cortex is retained. Height: 43.70mm Width at widest part or striking platform: 23.31mm Max diameter: 56.26mm Weight: 36.34g

A large flint cylindrical core of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is an a large, elongated shape, sub-triangular in cross-section. There are long, narrow blade scars on one face and smaller flake scars on the others running in a different direction. Working is limited and undiagnostic so a broad date range is suggested here. A crude blade fashioned from a core. The flint is dark grey, with some blue/grey patination. From a single striking platform two blade scars extend, with a third just to the side; the central scar ends in an abrupt break where the cortex has stopped the removal, possibly the outcome that inspired the removal of the blade; however, the thick scar along one edge makes it very comfortable to hold, with a still-sharp cutting surface opposite. The reverse side shows a clear bulb of percussion and has exposed an area of weakness in the flint at the bottom of the removal. It measures 60mm…

A knapped flint blade core of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date, c. 6000-3000 BC. It is broadly cuboidal in form, demonstrating at least ten negative blade removals on its outer surfaces. Both ends have been rejuvenated and used as platforms, with opposing pairs of removals occuring. One platform is flanked by a patch of cortex which now covers c. 10-15% of the entire object's surface, while the other demonstrates a crushed area abutting several failed blade removals with overhanging step fractures resulting from an inadequate knapping angle. Preserved in fairly fresh condition wi…

Four knapped flint blade-cores of probable Mesolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. Each core is described in turn. 1. Sub-cylindrical blade core on a piece of blackish blue flint, mostly still covered with cortex. The core demonstrates bipolar working from either end, with one platform partially broken away due to a large hinge-fracture. Numerous opposing blade negatives are visible on both ends of the core. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 58.27mm long, 26.36mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 66.88g. 2. Sub-cylindrical blade core on piece of yellowish brown flint, some cor…

A flint blade core of possible Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is struck from a dark grey to black flint, is conical in form, with one flattened platform and cortex remaining on one edge. The remaining edges have multiple narrow parallel blade scars. This core measures 41.94mm in length, 33.10mm in width, 25.73mm in thickness, and 39.77g in weight. This is a core probably from the manufacture of blades or long flakes, suggesting that it is likely to date to the later Mesolithic to Neolithic periods, perhaps c.7000-2550 BC.

A partially patinated flint object, possibly an incomplete core or similar, of probable later Prehistoric date, c.10,000-1 BC. It is pyramidal/conical in form and struck from a dark grey to black flint. The square base is unpatinated while the outer surfaces have partial patination perhaps suggestive of later re-use or damage to the original object. The outer surfaces have scars possibly resultant from small flake or blade removal, as well as small areas of surviving cortex. It measures 30.24mm in length, 26.19mm in width, 19.02mm in thickness and 16.45g in weight.

A partially patinated flint tortoiseshell core of Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The core is formed from a patinated brown flint that is circular in form and has steep unpatinated edge retouch producing the typical tortoiseshell core form. The unpatinated flint is probably part of an earlier lithic implement or core that has been subject to subsequent re-use, as evidenced by the unpatinated retouch. It measures 53.89mm in length, 51.42mm in width, 20.24mm in thickness and 61.90g in weight. Tortoiseshell cores such as this are typically of Late Neolithic date, c.2,500-2,100 BC. However,…
