A fragment Iron Age 'ribbed terret'. It is copper-alloy and the hoop has been cast in one with the bar, it would have been oval in shape when complete and the curvilinear fragment that survives measures 40.5mm in length and 11.3mm in width across the hoop. The hoop has four surviving lip mouldings along it. There are five terrets of a similar style, with between 8 to 11 lip mouldings round their circumference, from Kirkburn, east Yorkshire, they vary in size. The examples from Kirkburn have iron strap-bars, rather than cast in one copper-alloy, these are either straight or down…

An incomplete Iron Age terret ring harness fitting dating to 150 BC-AD 50. Te extant piece consists of a segment of the ring, which is broadly circular sectioned. It has a simple moulded raised discoidal projection. A portion of the next part of the ring survives by terminating in an ancient break.  It is consistent with Lewis' 2013 lobed terret group. Owing to the fragmentary nature of the terret, it is not possible to determine how many projections it would have had. Consequently, a broad 2nd century BC to early 1st century AD date is suggested…

An incomplete Iron Age terret ring harness fitting dating to circa 250 BC-AD 50. The extant piece consists of the narrowed rectangular bar with rounded edges. At either end of the bar are two projecting moulded collars which gave way to the ring. The ring has shoulders which taper dramatically and turn almost at a right angle before terminating in an ancient break. The terret is consistent with Lewis' D-shaped form (2013). Because the ring does not survive in any great volume it is difficult to determine whether it would have been plain or elaborately decorated and, consequen…

A complete copper-alloy late Iron Age to early Roman mini-terret. An oval loop shape and oval in cross-section, narrowing towards its upper edge, which has worn through and is missing. There is a narrowed, flattened and recessed bar, c.5.2mm long, to one side, with a raised transverse ridge to either side on both faces. Although larger terrets functioned as reign guides on carts/chariots, smaller terrets like this one appear to have had different functions. Hutcheson (2004, 29) suggests that they many have been attached to the end of the straps that held the linch pin o…

A fragment of an Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy terret ring harness fitting dating to circa 250 BC-AD 200.  The object consists only of a short section of metal, heavily worn and ending in breaks at both ends. The object consists of a curved length of moulded copper alloy, with two sections separated by an expanded moulding. The longer portion is rectangular-sectioned. It joins the flat end of the moulded collar at a slight angle, and appears to be slightly curved, The collar expands outwards from the bar at nearly 90 degrees to form a collar with an uneven sub-oval…

Two copper-alloy joining fragments of an Iron Age flat-ring terret, dating to the early first century AD. The two fragments are slightly curved in plan and in the front face have a champleve' decoration depicting a series of scrolls; along the inner and outer circumferential edge there is a raised rim. The cells are filled with enamel and traces of a silver covering is visible on the front face. Lewis (2015, 108) suggests that enamelled crescentic terrets featuring red and yellow enamel rather than a wider range of colours are likely to date from the early first century AD, althou…

Cast copper-alloy harness fitting of Iron Age date. The item is circular in shape and features a smaller circular bezel in the centre, supported by three arms each with collared terminals, connecting the central circle to the outer circle. The central boss likely contained a decorative setting which has since been lost. The underside of the central circular bezel and of the outer circular band are flat, giving the latter a 'D' shaped cross section. The circular bezel at the centre is hollow with a drilled circular hole in the centre. At each of the connection points of the…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a terret ring of uncertain type, dating to the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period, c. 100 BC- 100 AD. Only around 30-40% of the terret survives, the extant fragment consisting the very edge of the strap bar and one side of the object, truncated at both ends in old breaks. Curving in plan and broadly circular in section, it demonstrates an extremely prominent disc-shaped collar adjacent to the surviving fragment of strap bar, in addition to a projecting disc-shaped protrusion at the mid-point of its surviving side, the latter b…

A complete cast copper-alloy terret ring dating from the Middle Iron Age to early Roman periods, c. 100 BC -100 AD. This example is of Lewis' 'simple' type, being circular in plan and section, demonstrating two projecting circular collars at its lower edge which enclose a constricted strap-bar. At one end of the latter is concreted ferrous product which likely represents part of the means by which the terret was originally attached. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 38.08mm long, 42.17mm in diameter, 6.21mm thick at the midpoint of the strap-bar, 5.59m…

An incomplete copper alloy Iron Age to Roman dropped-bar terret. The object consists of a larger oval loop with a smaller rectangular loop extending from one side. There is a gap between the two loops caused by wear from use. The oval loop has a slightly thickened, rounded outer edge and low raised ridges on both faces to either side of its inner edge. The rectangular loop is slightly narrower than the oval one. The surface of the metal is fairly corroded. Terrets were attached to yokes positioned across the backs of pairs of ponies, functioning as rein guides. Lewis (2015, 96, tab…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy terret ring of probable later Iron Age or early Roman date corresponding to Hutcheson's 'three-lipped' type, dating c. 100 BC-100 AD. The object would originally have been broadly 'D' shaped in plan view, though now only around 1/3 of the terret survives intact, with the rest missing in old breaks. It consists of around half the rectangular-sectioned offset strap bar, at the surviving edge of which there is a prominent disc-shaped collar. This serves to divide the strap bar from the broadly plano-convex surviving arm of the frame, which tapers steadily …

An incomplete copper-alloy lipped terret ring of Late Iron Age to early Roman date. It comprises a flat bar that is rectangular in section and is mostly missing due to old breaks. The bar projects from the centre of a moulded vertical collar that is disc shaped in form and from which extends the surviving sections of the loop. The loop is circular in section, curved, and tapers towards old breaks. Towards the old breaks is a lip-shaped moulding formed from two outwardly projecting discs separated by a deep groove and with flat back/inner face on the loop. Between the bar and lipped mo…

An incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman knobbed terret (rein guide). It is roughly D-shaped. There is a narrowed bar, rectangular in cross-section, across the base, which would have allowed attachment to a vehicle. To either side of this there is a raised collar. The curved frame extends from these, this is oval in cross-section and tapers gradually towards the upper part of the terret. In the centre of the outer face of each side there is a three-lobed knob and in the centre of the outer face of the apex there is a four-lobed knob. One of the sign knobs is now largely…
