Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed axe of late Bronze Age date. Only a small fragment of the socket end survives. This is roughly sub-rectangular in plan with breaks around three sides and part of the outer edge of the socket surviving on the fourth edge. At the socket end the exterior has a thickened rim beneath which is a prominent transverse ridge. There is also a longitudinal casting seam running along the centre of the outer side. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and the breaks are well worn. Without further diagnostic details only a gen…

An incomplete copper-alloy socked axehead of late Bronze Age date. This is a fragment of the mouth of the axehead. Two sections of the body positioned at an abrupt right-angle to one another survive, each with a rough break around its outer edge. There is a raised rim around the outer face of the mouth and a raised parallel ridge behind this. Thin raised lines also run longitudinally along the centre of each outer face. The fragment has a brown patina with areas of green corrosion.  A similar example can be seen on the PAS database: NMS-38706A. Without further diag…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Middle Bronze Age gold tripartite penannular ring dating to circa 1300-1150 BC. It is C-shaped in plan comprised of three circular-sectioned penannular rings soldered together. The terminals are of an inconsistent width, creating an oblique aperture. Diameter: 14.2mm; Width: 6.4mm; Thickness: 1.3mm; Weight: 3.38g. Discussion: The form is consistent with other examples processed through the Treasure Act including 2021 T762 (Gard 2021) and 2012 T165 (Smith 2012) each of which is dated to the Middle Bronze Age. Meeks et. al. (2008, 13) note that “although small, penann…

A fragment of a copper-alloy late Bronze Age socketed axehead. Only the blade end and a small amount of the socket survive. The blade curves gently outwards while its sides curve inwards slightly towards the butt end. The break across the inner end is irregular and well worn. A rectangular indentation in the centre of the break represents all that is left of the inner part of the original socket. The surface of the metal is corroded in places. Only a broad late Bronze Age date can be suggested due to the lack of diagnostic features. Length: 39.33mm, width: 39.56mm, thi…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Bronze Age probable flat axehead or possibly a chisel dating to circa 2350-1500 BC. Trapezoidal in plan and rectangular-sectioned, the extant piece is heavily worn. It has a thin, straight butt which flares outwards before terminating in an ancient break before any diagnostic features would have been revealed. It is now heavily corroded and abraded. A broad Early Bronze Age date is suggested, consisted with the chronology for flat axeheads. Length: 42.8mm; Width: 22.3mm; Thickness: 5.2mm; Weight: 15.8mm.

A Bronze Age copper-alloy fragment of an axehead dating to circa 1600-800 BC. The extant peice consists of the crescentic cutting edge and lower blade. The break renders it difficult to determine the form of the complete axe - it could have been socketed but this is now unclear. As a result, it carries a broad Middle to Late Bronze Age date.  Length: 27mm; Width: 52.9mm; Thickness: 4.8mm; Weight: 47.24g.
