Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The item is possibly a copper-alloy Bronze Age (c. 1500 - 1150BC) small chisel or awl. The blade is square in cross section and tapers to a flat edge. One side of the blade tapers slightly more, making the edge on one side thinner and forming a slight concavity on this side. At the widest end of the blade there is an integral stop ridge which is semi-circular in plan and is partially broken. It would have been fully circular originally. It emerges perpendicular to the blade and tang, and is about 1.6mm thick. The blade protrudes from the centre of the face of this stop ridge on one f…

A Middle Bronze Age socketed spearhead, dating 1600-900BC. The blade is leaf shape with a ridge running down the centre, following the line of the socket. The blade is mostly flat with a roughly 4mm border around the edge where the blade tapers gradually towards the blade edge. The socketed end flares towards the base and has an open circular section for it to be shafted. There are two loops on opposite side of the socketed end in line with the casting seams, only traces of which remain. These loops are slightly flatened on the outside to make them appear lozenge shaped. There is a red…

Incomplete copper alloy socketed spear head, dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC-1150 BC). It has a sub triangular shape with the remains of a blade. The tip of the blade and the bottom of the socket are missing. At the bottom, just above the break on either side are two nodules, possibly the remains of a set of casting loops. The edges of the blade are worn, with a green patina developing in places, especially along the broken edges of the tip and socket. Similar style spearheads are recorded on the database, DENO-3B0107, WILT-B83B8F. Similar looped spearheads have been dated …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Late Bronze Age faceted socketed axe. The axe is sub rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in profile. The mouth of the axe is sub circular and damaged. The moulding is almost completely missing but a small surviving portion suggests that it was a single moulding. The sides of the axe are straight and flare only slightly towards the blade end. The front and rear faces of the axe are further 'body angled' making the axe faceted with a hexagonal section. The cutting edge and blade tips are missing and the exposed edges are worn and abraded. Complete cast copper alloy low flanged ‘type Blackrock’ middle Bronze Age palstave axe. The back portion of the axe has a septum that is rectangular in plan with a pronounced backstop. At their highest point, the side flanges do not rise past the backstop. They angle down gently towards the rear of the axe and reach the septum at a point just before the butt. This gives the back portion of the axe a wedge shaped, but profile with slightly curving edges. The butt of the axe is slightly chipped and worn. Incomplete, cast copper alloy Late Bronze Age pegged spearhead. The socket of the spearhead is essentially conical, having a circular section, and tapering into the rib of the blade. The once leaf-shaped blade (probably elliptical) is very worn down and little more than two flanges, that represent the lower blade survive. The surviving tip of the object is truncated and a small circular hole at the tip shows the cross section of the circular mid rib. Further damage from this truncation exists in a crack that runs from the broken tip for approximately 10mm down onto the rib. The side of…
