Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small Mesolithic tranchet axehead made from a dark grey flint which has a heavily recorticated or patinated white surface resulting from prolonged exposure to calcareous sediments. The cross section is D shaped and asymmetrical with one curved long side refined with flaked removals and one flattened side which is less coherently worked and retains a small patch of cortex towards the rear. The shape of this flat side appears to be a response to the original form of the nodule rather than a deliberate attempt to back the blade; the cross section becomes more lenticular towards the…

A complete flint core rejuvenation flake of probable prehistoric date, c.9000-2000 BC. The core is conical in shape, and sub-circular in plan. The dorsal face shows multiple flake scars and the original striking platform, which was removed to create a new platform. The dorsal face shows at least four earlier flake removals, and a small bulb of percussion. The core has a mid brown patina with patches of off white on the dorsal and ventral faces.  The core is 43.5mm long, 45.1mm wide, 17.2mm thick, and weighs 30.2 grams. Mesolithic to Neolithic (c. 6,500 to c. 2,200 BC) core: The core is traingular in section and sub-rectangular in profile. One face is almost completely covered in cortex. The core appears to be used to produce long, parrallel blades of varying width. The core has one striking platform to remove blades, The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour. The core measures 75.77mm long, 28.67mm wide, is 22.58mm thick and weighs 61.29 grams. The core probably dates to the Mesolithic to Neolithic period when taking into account of the single striking platform, blades, and parrell…

Knapped flint tertiary debitage: The flake is knapped from a dark grey coloured flint. The dorsal surface has multiple small slender scars which are mainly vertical, but some are obliquely angled. The ventral surface is smooth and has slight ripples, the bulb of percussion is missing. The flake weighs 3.38g and measures 30.49mm long, 21.24mm wide, and 5.15mm thick. The flake is prehistoric, probably dating to the Mesolithic to Neolithic period (-8300 to -2100) when considering the size of the scars on the dorsal surface.

The piece is a secondary piece of flint that is mostly a matte white colour with occasional orange and brown small inclusions. Only a small portion of thin off white mottled cortex survives on the side of the flake's dorsal surface. The flake is sub-rectangular in plan with irregular edges. The piece has at least four earlier flake removals on its dorsal surface struck in the same direction as this flake. The reverse has none. At the proximal end of the ventral surface a shallow bulb of perc…

The left side retains its cortex. On the reverse is a single large concave flaking scar. The flint is covered in a patchy creamy speckled grey patina with dark brown flint in the areas that have been chipped (natural damage). This is a core rejuvenation flake from the top of a Late Mesolithic blade core.

A complete Mesolithic flint adze or pick, dating from c. 10,000 to c. 3500 BC. This adze has been made on an elongated flint nodule of a mottled dark grey flint, now patinated white / light grey with evidence of recortification. Being broadly triangular in section this object can be described as a pick as well as an adze. The butt is squared in plan, the side taper gently and evenly towards the tip which is rounded. The adze is worn but is in good condition overall, with an area of post-depositonal damage around the butt.

A flint piercer made on a bladelet dating to the Late Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic period (c. 20,000-4,000 BC). The piercer has been made on a tertiary flake of a mottled orange-brown flint. The bulb is retained as is the small fragment of the platform. There are two flake scars on the dorsal surface. The lower half of the left hand edge of the dorsal side has been worked with soft hammer precussion, becoming more invasive towards the tip of the piercer, which has detatched, possibly during production but potentially after deposition.
