Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Prehistoric flint retouched flake, probably of Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date The flake is complete (with a length of 25.1mm, a width of 21.8mm, a thickness of 6.4mm and a weight of 2.6g). The retouch is neatly worked on a small distal area of one side (9mm long), with an area of utilisation on the proximal part of the same side. Both the retouch and utilisation are on the ventral surface of the flake. The dorsal surface displays evidence of core-preparation abutting the striking platform. The flake is made on grey, unpatinated flint.

Lead steelyard weight of uncertain date The lead weight is of irregular biconical form and is complete with a copper alloy suspension loop at both ends (with a length of 36.0mm and internal loop diameters of 4 - 5mm). One of the end loops contains iron corrosion. The weight is widest around its midsection (with a maximum diameter of 22.6mm) and is undecorated. The weight has few diagnostic features and weighs 35.0g which does not closely correspond to Roman period weighing systems. 35.0 grams roughly equates to a 1¼ ounce weight in both modern (1.235oz) and medieval Avoirdupois s…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead pan weight of uncertain date The weight is complete (with a length of 18.5mm). Both faces are circular (with a diameter of 14-15mm). The sides are concave, producing a minimum diameter of 12.2mm). One of the faces has the suggestion of an incised design, possibly a star within a circular border. The weight weighs 25.0g, which is equivalent to 0.885oz. The weight is not diagnostic and is difficult to date the weight of 25.0g is broadly consistent with a 1oz weight of Medieval and post medieval systems.

Probable handle fragment of copper alloy of uncertain date and broken at both ends. The piece has three ribs; one central rib and one each side, one of the side ribs is more pronounced than the other two ribs. The fragment begins to expand past the ribbed area and this section seems to be defined by an incised line at each end, and contains punched chevrons and diamonds, possibly originally filled with black enamel. This end possibly has an area with a concave profile, possibly suggesting the recess to take a pin for a hinge.
