A rolled and folded lead sheet of uncertain dating, probably Roman to Modern (AD 43-1950). The object is roughly tubular in form but appears to have been an irregular shape prior to folding. The object is filled by lead carbonates and soil, and one corner has been folded over a segment of 0.5mm diameter copper alloy wire, with unidentified fibres present in some of the lead carbonate and soil fill. The outer surface of the object has tool marks- parallel lines likely representing the jaws of some pliers or tongs as well as some impressions that appear to be from twisted wire. The obj…

Cast copper alloy collar fitting of uncertain date, possibly Iron Age The fitting comprises a comparatively substantial crude casting and appears to be complete but is a composite part, of U-shaped form (with a height of 27.3mm, an external diameter of 34.4mm, an internal diameter of 22.2mm and a weight of 62.5g). Both sides are straight and near parallel (with a width of 32.3mm at one end and 30.0mm at the other). The face has heavy ribbing, with a rib on each side and a midrib (giving a maximum thickness of 7.0mm). The terminals have integral lugs, which are likely to have enga…

A small corroded fragment of copper alloy, possibly part of an openwork strap end of Early Medieval date. The object is flattened in cross section. It consists of a roughly shield shaped terminal that bifurcates into two broken projections from its top. One of these is c.8.5mm long, while the other is broken at its base. There is a cross design incised off centre on the upper surface of the terminal, while the reverse is undecorated and slightly flattened. The original surface is lost to corrosion, and the object has a dark green pitted surface as a result. While this object is …

The possible cast mount is complete (with a length of 23.5mm, a height of 22.9mm and a weight of 18.0g). The mount is of bulbous bi-lobed form (21.5mm wide and 13.1mm thick) with a curving point projecting from each lobe. At the centre is a shallow rounded groove, widest at the base. Both lobes are decorated with prominent ribbing defined by grooves. The lobes terminate in gently curving points of rounded D-shaped section, slightly flattened on t…

Probable Bronze Age gold strip fragment. This is a semi-worked thickened strip fragment of gold of broadly rectangular shape. The strip has been worked and there are hammer facets visible on the flat surfaces and side margins. One edge has been hammered up and has a projecting margin on one face edge. The strip was broken at one end with a double-grip tool without sharp edges. As a result, there is widening, lateral distortion with thinning at one end, near the break. On one face, the break has created a near flat angled facet, while on the reverse there is a distinct concave curva…

Stone ball. Diameter 33mm. The function of the ball is uncertain; however, it is possibly a baking ball used to hold down empty pastry cases to stop them rising in the oven. Dating is problematic but if it is a baking ball then it may be relatively recent in date.
