A near complete cast copper alloy mount of late Early Medieval to Medieval date, likely dating from the 11th to earlier 13th century in date. The mount is complete apart from the two non-integral rivets, which survive as stumps. The mount is flat in section (excepting the rivets) and roughly a wide shield shape in plan, with a near flat top and sides that curve smoothly down to the lowest point. Roman copper alloy vessel escutcheon of ox-head form The cast ox-head escutcheon is incomplete, missing one of the side loops and the lower part of the basal loop (with a surviving length of 45.4mm, a surviving width of 33.0mm and a weight of 18.3g). The reported object is a silver mount, bearing two incomplete inscriptions engraved against a recessed diagonally hatched background (?for enamel or niello). It reads null ce.. / bien in Black Letter script. There are two incomplete rivet holes, suggesting that it once formed part of a composite object. Maximum height 24.6mm; maximum width 18mm; minimum width 16.8mm; thickness 0.9mm; weight 4.04g. The object fragment has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. The mount is of 'figurative' type depicting a stylised acorn and may be seen as crudely cast. The mount is convex across its width and flat on the rear with two integral attachment pins evident but heavily eroded (with a surviving depth of 3.4mm). An Iron Age copper alloy decorative mount, probably of mid to late 1st century AD date. The perforated copper alloy mount or escutcheon is probably from a vessel. The mount is likely to be complete with a length of 23.05mm, a width of 15.89mm and a depth of 21.45mm. The sides of the mount are flat and converge towards the ‘beaked’ end.
