A copper-alloy horse harness link of 11th century date. Anglo-Scandinavian horse harness fittings are discussed by Williams (2007), who illustrates a similar example to this piece (p. 5, (b)), from Soberton, Hampshire. Several parallels are also recorded on the PAS database - see, for example, BH-D36F23 and SOMDOR-E14156. At the centre of the double-ended link is a moulded boss which takes the form of a forward-facing zoomorphic head. Each of the two eyes is depicted with a single raised pellet. The nose consists of a vertical ridge between the eyes which forks at the bottom, th…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Luton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Circular lead seal matrix of medieval date. A non-heraldic, personal seal which probably dates from the mid 13th C. AD. The object measures 33mm diameter by 4.8mm thick and weighs 38.33g. It has suffered badly from corrosion and the legend is unclear. The central design sits within a circular border and is a fairly crudely executed fleur-de-lis pattern. The legend is unclear but appears to read: "[S]IGILLU[M] SIUV....." The lettering is poorly executed and heavily damaged. The reverse of the piece is plain, with no evidence of a handle.
