Object type: POLISHER
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Stone rubber. A water-rolled pebble with abundant black flecks to diameter 3mm, with one flattened sub-triangular surface. The object is of a size to fit snugly in the hand and may have been used for a grinding or polishing task using the flat face. The use of a probable Glacial Erratic for such purposes might be ascribed to Prehistory, or indeed any time up to the Viking Age, when the international supply of stone for specialist purposes was revived. Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Oyster shell. The bottom half of an edible oyster shell. A seafood diet was introduced or expanded under Roman rule, when British oysters acquired an empire-wide reputation. Oysters remained as a common foodstuff into the early post-medieval period, their availability probably only declining with environmental degradation in industrial times – though Viking Age York contrived to pollute its waterways to an extent which altered the local faunal range significantly. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy probable buckle. Cast asymmetrical sub-rectangular double looped buckle frame with an ornately moulded and expanded outer loop bearing complex zoomorphic or vegetal motifs, with small fronds extending to overlap the smaller rectangular inner loop. The flat underside of the outer edge bears multiple drilled pits of which only one or two are carried through the object, the others being shallow and blind, as if an openwork scheme had been attempted but abandoned. Initially a post-medieval date was considered on the basis of the form, but the reddish tint of metal and the deco…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead possible weight. Cast oval plano-convex object, pierced with a possibly drilled hole on the site of a short cut at its edge, and with a broad cut across its flat surface; patinated. This might have been cast from scrap as a tiny ingot as the underside is rough and perhaps sanded but the hole suggests it was then put to some suspended use. Improvised use – perhaps for only a single operation – as a palm guard might equally be entertained. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast discoid cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. One side bears a possibly decorative scheme of indistinct shapes to either side of a gutter round the central hole. This might alternatively be the fortuitous result of shrinkage from casting in an open mould. The metal retains a grey tint which might argue against identification as a whorl, and perhaps in favour of a use as a much more recent fishing line weight. Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy ring of unknown date.
The ring is oval in plan and almost hexagonal in cross section with bevelled front and back inner and outer faces. There are traces of a casting line extending around the outer edge. It is plain and has a dark green patina. The ring has a maximum diameter of 41.5mm, is 5.5mm wide, and 3.7 thick. It weighs 11.12 grams.
Plain rings such as these cannot usually be closely dated and served various functions such as harness fittings and dress accessory components.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy object of Roman or medieval date. The object is an incomplete shank of octagonal section. There section is essentially a square with a narrow facet at each corner. File marks are visible along all sides, and the object has a dark brown patina. One end is broken while the other terminates with two prongs. The prongs are curved and appear to be a modification of an object that once served a different purpose. The object seems too thick to be a needle or bodkin. The prongs are suggestive of a nail cleaner, but again the spacing between the prongs seems to wide f…

Lead weight. Small cast sub-conical weight with a longitudinal possibly pierced aperture of 5-3.5mm width. Three tiny sharp flanges project from the base and appear alongside what appears as tiny slits. Patinated overall. The finder kindly suggests a function as a line weight, which appears apt. These are usually ascribed to the medieval period, but a pot mend from the same site bears exactly the same surface patina and was ascribed to the Roman period. Copper alloy strap end fragment. One sheet of an assembled strap end, some remains of rocked tracer decoration, worn. An illustration shows an openwork post-medieval mount. County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible button or cuff link fragment. Cast flat plain discoid front retaining a hard pale buff material on its display side, possibly a degraded enamel, with a central hole on the back for a loop [lost]. Similar material appears in the cup of 'golf tee' studs of Roman date, which imposes caution before assigning a dismissively recent date - Read's work on medieval and later buttons does not feature enamelled fronts at all. Lead possible weight fragment. A cast triangular block, flat-sided and with one flat regular edge; the other two longer sides appear uneven as if a fragment had been roughly hacked from a larger object which was originally carefully cast in a finely sanded mould whose imprint may appear on the base [as cast]; one broken side coincides with a long hollow casting flaw. Patinated. Objects of about this mass occur among weights from medieval London, though neither frequently nor of this form (Egan 1998, Table 15, Fig. 229). Object type: DISC
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy disc. A small cast flat-sided disc, probably cut to its final shape, with a central drilled hole of diameter 2mm, surrounded on one side by four symmetrically disposed blind pits of slightly smaller diameter. This might have functioned as a mount, or perhaps as the separate head of a pin. A range of flat mounts is reported from medieval London and many remain attached to belts, though the ‘decorative’ scheme is odd here and the central fixing point excessively wide, and few medieval mounts are as chunky and simple in form (Egan and Pritchard 1991). The range of…
