An Early Medieval copper-alloy stirrup mount, dating to c.AD 1000 - 1100. Williams (1997) Class A,Type 9. The stirrup is sub-trapezoidal in plan and rectangular in section. The upper edge exhibits a projecting lobe with a central rivet hole for attachment. Below is an anthropomorphic facing mask with recessed eyes of differing shapes, a central moulded trapezoidal nose and two transverse mouldings indicating the mouth. Copper alloy possible buckle fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A small cast loop with a markedly projecting lip in the zoomorphic form of a pointed beast head with prominent sub-triangular eyes or ears upstanding on top and with a grooved or hollowed underside; the putative strap bar is absent. The reddish tint of the metal is a feature often associated with Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork. The uppermost part bears opposed sub-triangular lappets occupied by Salin style I decoration with a rectangular panel between them. A fragment from a cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger dating to c.AD 470-560 Only the shank/neck has survived. It is plano-convex with a thickened side terminating with a broken loop. The thickened end (4.6 mm thick) is decorated with cast transverse ribs: two raised bands, followed by a space, then a further two bands. A medial ridge runs the entire length of the extant piece. The headplate comprises a trefoil head with three projecting sub-rectangular lobes with semi-circular cut aways at each angle. A massy cast D-shaped buckle with an expanded and thickened textured outer edge with a broad grooved collar towards either end and a narrowed strap bar whose ends are grasped by biting beast heads; the centre of the strap bar is notched to receive a pin [lost]. This is a somewhat massier version of a buckle form usually ascribed to the 11th century. A wider date range is offered with deference to its atypical features. This sort of brooch is infrequently reported in our area, though a Roman version was recently reported from Low Burnham in the Isle of Axholme. A series of semi-circular stamps, each arc enclosing a dot and so resembling halved ring-and-dot, passes along the outer borders of the central stalk, follows the edges of the troughs on either side, and ascends the inner side of the outer elements.
