County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
The find consists of a rough, cylindrical ingot with rounded ends and hammered surfaces; length, 38.1 mm; width, 12.4 mm; weight 30.58 g. It does not conform to the usual shape of either Roman or Early Medieval ingots and has no distinguishing features. It is therefore undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.

County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy object. The patina and general form of this piece suggest it may be part of an Iron Age or Roman bracelet. The object is in the form of a broad curve. It is of oval section, a decorative ridge and groove extending around the centre of the outer surface. The surfaces have a dark blueish-green patina which extends across the breaks (both ends), indicating that the damage occurred in antiquity. The artefact measures 58.8mm long and weighs 8.23g; the width is 4.4mm, the thickness 3.2mm.

An incomplete copper-alloy ring of uncertain date and function. Just over half of the ring remains. It is of oval section throughout, although the width and thickness decrease towards one of the broken ends, where the outer surface exhibits several transverse grooves, possibly the result of wear. There are is also a pair of parallel grooves which extends around remaining circumference. It is unclear whether these grooves are decoration or are the unintentional result of finishing or wear. The surfaces have a dark greyish-green patina and are corroded in place. The object measures 31…

County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified copper-alloy artefact which is possibly a mount. The form and level of patination of this piece suggests a possible Iron Age to Roman date. The head consists of a plate of roughly lozenge shape, the sides being concave. At the centre is a circular depression. Protruding from the centre of the reverse is an integral prong with adhering iron corrosion or mineralised leather. The object measures 18.8mm long, 17.4mm wide and 9.2mm thick. The weight is 3g.

Undated copper alloy miscast object. The object is rectangular with a pointed terminal at one end; the opposing end decreases in thickness and has a semi-circular recess. It has a rectangular cross section. The lower half of the object has a large, irregular pitting with rough surface where it has been miscast; immediately above this area is an irregular projection, presumably the run-off from the mis-casting. The object is powder-green in colour due to corrosion, however the metal is a reddish-brown on the angles. It is 48.85mm long, 21.12mm wide, 21.33mm thick i…

A lead steelyard weight. The weight is bi-conical and has a median band. Protruding from the top is the remnant of an iron loop. The shorter lower half of the weight bears traces of a black paint or corroded white-metal coating. The artefact is heavily corroded. It measures 39.2mm high, 33mm wide (diameter at centre). The weight is 175.49g, which isn't an obvious proportion of a Roman libra or of any later weighing system. The condition and form, however, do suggest a Roman to Medieval date to be most likely.

Complete cast copper alloy biconical bead of uncertain date. Circular in plan, with a bi conical profile and a central cylindrical perforation. It has been covered in a black substance by the finder. Similar beads are known from elsewhere in England and at least 25 examples are recorded on the PAS database including examples from Essex (e.g. ESS-81C115) Suffolk (e.g. SF-988881) and Kent (KENT-A3BC02.) However while Roman or Late Iron Age dates are regularly proposed, the simple form of these beads makes them impossible to securely assign ot a date range.

Fragment of an unidentified cast copper alloy object. This object consists of a thick sheet of metal, broken at either end but with two original rounded edges survive with converging angles which give the fragment a triangular shape. An irregular ridge or casting flash runs down the centre of this sheet. On the reverse a second integrally cast sheet, running along the same alignment as the casting flash projects outwards on a perpendicular plane. This sheet has no original surviving edges and bubbles from casting are visible in the abraded broken edges. The finder has covered this obj…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary cast copper-alloy bowl of uncertain date. The simplicity of construction and lack of any diagnostic features make dating of this piece difficult. Approximately three quarters of the vessel survives, broken (in antiquity) into six irregular pieces. The base of the vessel is flat and has adhering substances on the inner surface. The break between the base and side is imperceptible, the latter angling upwards at approximately 80 degrees. At the top is a simple rim, the slightly protruding side forming a possible lid seat on the inner surface. The bowl is heavily corro…

An unidentified token or coin, cast in an unidentified white-metal, and probably dating from the Medieval to post-Medieval periods. The central image on one side is of uncertain nature, consisting on an irregular pattern of curved lines which radiate outwards from a central point. The legend around the perimeter reads '+AMOR PATRIS' (love of one's father). The central design on the opposite side resembles a stylised fleur-de-lis, over which is a rectangular arrangement of four pellets. A partially melted copper-alloy artefact of uncertain date and function. The object, which bears some similarity to a swivel, appears to have originally been symmetrical in form, consisting of a central block with a longitudinal groove at the middle of both its upper and lower surfaces. At one end of this block the two corners are occupied by a pair of perforated lugs with mouldings on their sides and, on the outer side of the intact example, evidence of wear.
