Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint Mesolithic tranchet axehead dating to c.10,000-4,000 BC. The chert is mottled grey-brown with small patches of cortex surviving on one face and edge. The axehead is sub-rectangular in plan with the bladed end rounded and the butt end rectilinear. The core has been irregularly worked on both faces to create a plano-convex, sub-trapezoidal cross-section at the cutting edge which thickens towards the butt, becoming more lozengform. The butt end is broken with a smooth flat face. The axehead is 38mm long, 37mm wide and 22mm thick at the butt end, 35mm wide and 1.8mm ti…

County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of three flint blades, grouped due to their geographical proximity and probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic. Two of the pieces are secondary blades which have striking platforms and a pronounced bulb-of-percussion. The longest blade, which may be earlier than the other two, has a smaller bulb-of-percussion, perhaps indicating indirect percussion, and a more heavily recorticated surface. Dimensions of longest blade: 73.8mm long, 24.3mm wide. Weight: 18.1g. Total weight of assemblage: 46.1g.

A Mesolithic flint blade, dating 7000 - 4000 BC. The blade is sub rectangular and trapezoidal in cross section. The flint has a mottled light-dark blue and white patina. There is evidence of retouch along the longest edges on the dorsal side. A bulb of percussion is present though striking platform appears to have broken away. There is some damage to the dorsal side, probably caused in more recent times. Dimensions: Length: 40.73 mm; Width: 14.98 mm; Thickness: 4.28 mm; Weight: 3.60g

A Mesolithic to Paleolithic flint scraper, dating 8300-2100 BC. The flint is a mottled mid-dark grey. There is an evident striking platform at one end with marks of a conchoidal fracture on both sides. The proximal end appears to have been damaged in more recent years. There is slight evidence of retouch on the blade edge, though only in part. This may be a flint scraper that was unfinished. Two flint blades of probable Late Mesolithic to Mid Neolithic date (c. 7000 - 3300 BC). Blade no. 90 (left-hand flint on image) is incomplete, the lack of patination on the break suggesting this damage occurred relatively recently. The remaining portion is sub-rectangular, with several vertical arrises on the dorsal surface and evidence of platform preparation at the proximal end. The striking platform remains, adjacent to which is a diffuse bulb and ripples. The surface is heavily patinated, white with occasional iron staining. Length: 24.8mm; width: 13.3mm; thickness: 6.2mm. An assemblage of five flint blades, probably dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods. Blade numbers 24 (top left on photograph), 29 (top right) and 26 (middle right) are all broken tertiary blades, have trapezoidal to triangular sections and show no evidence of retouch. Blade no. 25 (middle left) has the same cross section but one end has been abruptly retouched to form a point, and could be described as a microlith. The final blade, no. 28 (bottom row), is a secondary blade, trapezoidal in section and soft-hammer-struck. The right-hand mesial edge of this blade exhibits pr…

A Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint blade. The sub-rectangular blade is of triangular section, its thickness gradually increasing towards the damaged distal end. A bulb-of-percussion is visible at the proximal end of the ventral surface, adjacent to which there remains a small portion of the core platform. The sides have a serrated appearance, probably as a result of wear through use. The flint has a dark grey core and blueish surface patination. A complete flint pickaxe, probably dating from the Mesolithic period (c. 10,000 BC to c. 4,001 BC). This would appear to be a double-ended implement, with a pick at one end and an axe-like blade at the other. Most of the surface of the original nodule has been removed, but one side in particular retains a significant portion of its cortex. The narrowest point is at the pick end, where the surfaces have been deliberately sloped to point, which exhibits signs of wear. The sides gradually diverge from this point, the implement reaching a maximum width approximately one third of the way…

A Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic flint blade. The conchoidally fractured blade is of sub-rectangular plan and its surfaces are a heavily patinated white. At least three longitudinal arrises are visible on the dorsal surface, interrupted at one point by a fossil inclusion, which has resulted in a step fracture. A small portion of the core platform remains at the proximal end, with an adjacent bulb-of-percussion on the ventral surface. The edges show no evidence of retouch. Dimensions: length: 45.1mm; width: 16.6mm; thickness: 8.4mm. Weight: 3.15g.

Two incomplete flint blades, probably dating from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic periods. Both pieces are sub-rectangular in plan, of triangular section and display no signs of having been used as tools. The larger blade retains part of its core platform, beneath which is a bulb-of-percussion; the smaller blade has a bulb-of-percussion, with clear rippling below. The larger piece is heavily patinated, with a mottled greyish-blue surface, while the other is less heavily patinated, with mid-grey flint containing lighter inclusions. Both blades appear to have been broken off at…
