The coin is in fragmentary condition with a section of the outer edge of the coin missing, having broken along the line of the inner circle, and another break across the inner circle.

An incomplete, slightly worn and bent late 10th-century early-medieval silver penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), 'Crux' type, uncertain moneyer and mint (c. 991 - 997 AD; North 770). This coin has been cut down to the inner circle, in some places following the line in varying levels of neatness, in others going beyond the line. The purpose of such reduction is uncertain, although not an isolated occurance (see 'Notes', below).
