An incomplete light white brown quartz stone cobble possible polisher or rubber of uncertain date, probably Iron Age to Medieval, c. 800 BC - AD 1000. The object is an oval-ended pebble with a flattened and polished edge. An irregular break is present to one end of the stone. The object is 71.3mm long, 52.7mm wide, 58.9mm thick and weighs 294g. A similar example recorded on the PAS database as LIN-273AA4 states that the use of various erratic stones as improvised rubbers, polishers, grinders and sharpeners was common from Prehistory through to the end of the Early Medieval period.

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possibly complete stone object, possibly a whetstone or hone of uncertain date. The object is formed from a finely grained light brown stone, with a sub-rectangular plan and section. The surfaces are smoothed and the edges and corners rounded suggesting it may have been used as a whetstone or similar. The object is 44.9mm long, 19mm wide, 15.1mm thick and weighs 25.5g. It is extremely difficult to date whetstones accurately without any supporting contextual evidence. This object was found in an area of known Early-Medieval activity, a similar date therefore cannot be ruled out.

The axehead is sub-ovate in plan; narrower at the butt end with sides which widen to the crescentic cutting edge. The axe has a slight humped profile and a regular oval cross section. A large transverse break is present to one surface. The blade end exhibits prominent crescentic polished facets to both sides reflecting how the cutting edge has been ground and sharpened. It is impossible to source axes such as these wi…

An irregular chunk of a dense off-white stone in which crystalline structures appear to run in two distinct planes. These are exposed at either sub-oval end as a mass of  platelets set on end, with zones of a contrasting orientation on its sides exhibiting a smoother or finer-grained surface with linear striations, though still sparkling under strong lighting. It is uncertain whether this material may originate from veins in the local chalk geology, or from an imported building stone. The texture of the material appears, however, too friable for any sculptural use. It wa…

Chalk floor tile fragment. A flat slab of chalk, smoothed by wear on its upper and lower sides, and probably broken on all other sides; dark grey burning traces on one of these edges might indicate the position in which this object was reused along with other rubble in the construction of a flue shaft, with the discoloured part exposed to the hot air flow. The smoothing of both the upper and lower surfaces may suggest the slab had been inverted in the course of a prolonged primary use, during or after which it was broken. Other finds suggest a firm Roman date for both the primary and …

Dense fine-grained reddish-buff Sandstone possible quern fragment, chipped and burnt across all surfaces. A thick lump of non-local stone recovered from a reuse context where it formed an element in a lining, wall or footing made up of reused materials; three fragments more securely identifiable as from two other rotary querns accompanied this object, though these were made from stones of lesser density. This is possibly a fragment representing a third quern in this group. The measurements of the chunk cannot firmly identify its height were this identification sustained; i.e. the orie…

Fine-grained buff Sandstone with very occasional grey flint inclusions (of lengths 3-8.5mm), now variably reddened by burning on all surfaces, from reuse as building material or flue-lining; two rotary quern fragments, probably from the same stone. An effectively vertical curved outer edge on the larger fragment permits estimation of its original diameter of 340mm. Rough concave hollows, typically of diameter 10-25mm, mark pecking extending to its adjacent upper and lower surfaces. These hint at a lightly plano-convex form for the stone. However, no smoothed grinding surfaces appear o…

Fine-grained compacted buff Sandstone rotary quern fragment, perhaps comprising a little under a quarter of the original conical to hemispherical top stone of a pair, and of an estimated diameter of 210mm. The function is indicated by a relict part of its flat smoothed lower working surface, of length 131mm and width 55mm. Opposite this, on the upper part of the stone, a narrow relict smoothed zone of length 65mm and width 15mm includes a descending curve on its inner edge, marking a central feed hole. This may suggest that the external surface of the stone, or at least that part near…

Fine-grained compacted Sandstone rotary quern fragment. The upper stone from a large rotary quern, chipped with loss of over half its fabric. The damage includes the removal of large flakes or chunks from the upper surface, and subsequent reddening of the exposed fracture surfaces by burning. The former could relate to the deliberate 'killing' of the object, a behaviour often sought in prehistoric contexts investigated by controlled excavation, while the latter might arise from its subsequent incorporation into a hearth or oven - a pattern of reuse often found in areas devoid of good …
