Object type: PIPE (SMOKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Six clay pipe stems with a small part of the bowl remaining, dating from c. 1720-1820 (average diameter of stem: 8mm; collective weight: 20.23g). Each of these fragments has either a complete, slightly broken or missing spur below where the bowl meets the stem. In most examples, they protrude downwards at a near right angle, ending in a smoothed point. Slightly different spur points may indicate that the pipes were made in local and different production centres (Cleverdon, 1995, 13). All these examples are undecorated and are in a slightly worn but fair condition. Made from pipe clay.…

Three wheel thrown coarseware sherds (average thickness: 11-12mm; collective weight: 115.61g) with ridges or scar marks on the lesser glazed side indicating that other vessels were placed on top of or stuck to these vessels during the firing process. The glaze is dark brown - black with the inner fabric ranging from brown - grey to pink, with large gritty inclusions throughout. These sherds could be known as 'saggars' and are hard-fired crude and cylindrical vessels that were used to hold more delicate materials, or alternatively pancheons which are low large dished vessels. A small wheel thrown possible foot ring base and side sherd of Blackware (49.7mm x 43.1mm; thickness: 3.6mm; weight: 14.81g). There is glaze on both sides of the vessel, as well as blistering at one end, with one hole running straight through the fabric, indicating firing at high temperatures. The fabric is rather hard and reddish-grey in colour and has been glazed inside and out with the lead glaze probably drawing iron from the body. These vessels would have probably been fired inside a pancheon or harder vessel in order to withstand the high temperatures. This vessel dates from …

A small wheel thrown base and side sherd of Blackware (height: 43mm; diameter of base: 43.6mm; thickness: 5.3mm; weight: 21.79g). Probably originally in the form of a small cup with multiple handles, this is a poor quality sherd which has been reasonably well-fired due to blistering near the base. The fabric is rather hard and reddish-grey in colour and have been glazed inside and out with the lead glaze probably drawing iron from the body. A small piece of kiln furniture or 'spacer', sub circular in shape (40.8mm x 39.2mm; thickness: 12.1mm; weight:23.76g). This piece would have been used to fill or plug any spaces in the kiln, and would have had glazed material on top and around it, hence the glazing down the sides of the 'spacer'. There is more than one definite edge, with one broken edge, as well as the probable remains of a fingerprint on one of the surfaces. This 'spacer' dates between the late 16th - early 18th century. A roughly hand made circular ceramic piece of kiln furniture or 'spacer' (diameter: 60.9mm; thickness: 15.2mm; weight: 53.85g). This 'spacer' would have been used to fill or plug any gaps in the kiln during the firing process. A highly vitrified and over-fired base and side Black Ware sherd (44mm x 57.1mm x 28.1mm; thickness: 11.5mm; weight: 39.97g). By firing to such a high temperature, the clay seems to have melted with the surface blistering, and the vessel has effctively become a stoneware. The sherd is most likely to be a fragment of kiln waste, dating to the late 16th - early 18th century. Black wares are essentially a soft to hard-fired thrown earthenware, and in this case, has a grey fabric colour. The lead glaze probably draws iron from the body, which gives the dark colour. Black wares are typical…
