Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire

Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

Treasure case : 2007 T559 A small gold decorated disc. Small gold decorated disc. The gold circular disc was bent over itself so that only approximately two thirds of the original form remained flat. A further smaller distortion was evident at the edge of the disc. There were three concentric rings of circular traces on the disc. These comprised 22 circular traces, 11 circular traces and finally 5 circular traces in the centre. There are few scratches on the objects and no other observable decorations. Due to it's undiagnostic nature it does not represent Treasure under the terms of …

A medieval finger ring, hollow cast, with a roughly oval aperture at the bezel. The back of the bezel is open so that the stone it once held would have been in contact with the wearer's skin. This may indicate that the stone was thought to have magical properties. It would have been secured in place by two pins inserted through two small apertures, one at the top and one at the bottom. The external face of the hoop is decorated on the left with a double row of zigzags, which runs into an inscription: IC HOPE (I hope) In the field after the inscription the zigzags are re…

Treasure case : 2008 T700 Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel. While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…

Reference: YORYM:2003.3203, Small Find 16, context 1112. Found in a later-medieval grave during excavations of a medieval cemetery by York Archaeological Trust, however Dr. Martin Henig of Oxford University commented that the ring appeared to be late Roman, circa 4th century, and wondered whether it could have come from a rich, disturbed burial (personal communication with Nicola Rogers, Artefact…

A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

TREASURE CASE : 2009 T223 Description: Gold finger ring set with a large blue gemstone and red glass cloisonné. The central cabochon gem is surrounded by four triangular cells. Where these meet, small round cells have been set. Three of these round cells still contain minute granular inlays, although it is impossible to determine whether they are glass pastes, glass or gem stones. A short, straight cell wall emanates from each roundel and meets the corners of the outer, square frame of the bezel, thus bisecting the space between the triangles. Glass slips are still present in on…

TREASURE CASE : 2011 T109. Description: A gold finger-ring of late medieval date, probably 15th century. The bezel is formed from four petals of a flower, possibly intended to represent a rose. Engraved decoration on the petals may have originally held enamel. A small rod which now protrudes from the centre of the bezel may have originally held a pearl, now missing. Description: Severely damaged and distorted gold finger ring of tenth-century date. Oval to round hoop narrowing down to a parallel-sided band at both sides. The band was torn open at some point and while its shorter side accordingly ends in a ragged edge, the longer end has a straight, cut-off edge. The bezel carries a central, damaged glass cabochon, (now) dark brown, in a dog-tooth setting surrounded by a fine beaded wire. Around the cabochon, 14 gold pellets - of varying sizes and some of them squashed and abraded - are placed inside beaded wire filigree. Originally, there wa…

A gold finger ring with a D-shaped section, no joint is evident in the hoop of the ring. The exterior of the hoop has been decorated with an elaborate floral design, with scrolling foliage and flowers. Inside some of the angles a trace amount of a black substance can be seen, it is therefore possible that the finger ring may have been enameled with black enamel. The edges of the hoop have a slightly raised rim. The interior of the hoop is inscribed with serifed capitals DESIRE.HATH.NO.RESTE. The stops are formed from small crosses.
