Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A lead possible spindle whorl which probably dates from the Iron Age date, about 800 BC - AD 50. If it is a spindle whorl, it is of Walton Rogers Form C1 which has no flat faces and curved sides. The central perforation is 8.4mm which is at the larger end of the range suggested by Walton Rogers for Iron Age spindle whorls (4-8mm). The height of the object is 18.9mm, the diameter 22.6mm, and the weight is 48.4g. It has a white patina. There is some damage to one end. While it is possible that it is an Iron Age spindle whorl, the object could also…

A small lead probable spindle whorl of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is conical with a truncated top and a small central circular perforation of 2.2mm diameter. It fits into Walton Rogers form A2 if it is a whorl, but the size of the central hole may be too small, and the object may be a weight or bead instead. The object is 12.9mm long, 11.9mm wide, 8.8mm thick and weighs 5.62g.  The hole in the centre of the top has a diameter of 2.2mm. Form A2 whorls are most common from AD 700 - 1100, but those with a central hole smaller than 6mm diameter are more likely to b…

An incomplete cast, lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight is broadly bi-conical in form with both sections tapering to a rounded point. One section appears slightly truncated; it is possible that this would have been the site of an attachment loop would have been attached. This would probably have been made of iron. Although minimal there is some evidence of iron corrosion on the surface of the weight at one apex.  The surface of the weight is undecorated and is patinated creamy-brown with patches of grey. …
