An abraded sherd of Roman samian pottery, probably a 2nd century AD Gaulish Dragendorff type 37 bowl. The main feature of this body sherd is the moulded decoration around the outside. The scene depicts a bull butting left; the forelegs of a second quadruped can be seen immediately above and the hind legs of a third animal (or possibly human arms?) lie to the left of the bull. In addition to the zoomorphic decoration, there is moulded grass along the bottom of the panel and, to the right of the bull, vine-like scroll. A ropework border marks the bottom of the panel and below this is …

Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

Fragment of rim from a copper alloy vessel. This is probably a rim from a cauldron or similar vessel. The rim is pointed and has an external bead. The vessel wall is thinned from the rim.The interior surface appaers smoothed whilst the exterior is rough and un-polished. There is clear evidence of mending of this vessel in the form of two rivet holes (one whole, with partial rivet and one incomplete). These were probably used to fix a plate of sheet metal (not present) to join a split in the vessel wall just below the rim. Medieval to post medieval. Possibly 15th to 17th century. Dimen…

A cast copper alloy foot and part of a leg from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel. The leg is wide and thin and broadly trapezoidal in cross section with a wider front than back. The leg curves outwards at the front to form the foot which has a flat trapezoidal base. The leg rises at c.70 degrees from the base. The front corners of the foot are rounded and there is an old break at the top of the leg. Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) suggest that this form of pot leg (type A) was widespread in the Medieval period with examples still in use into the early 17th century.
