TREASURE CASE 2010 T164: Silver handle
Silver handle in the form of a snake. The sinuous form, adapted to the requirements of a vessel handle, provides a looped grip and two contact points with the (now missing) vessel body. Both points preserve remains of the joining solder. A schematic punched 'scaly' design is present on the outer surface, while the rhomboidal head of the snake is depicted with eyes and parted jaws. Although passingly similar to Roman snake jewellery the form, style and craftsmanship are not closely paralleled by Roman work. Nor has it been possible to assign t…

A Medieval silver band measuring about 90 mm in length, and 12 mm in width. The band is collared, the central section decorated with a series of engraved rectangles and zigzags. Placed within it is a single line of text, which reads
+IASPAR X MELCIOR X BA(?)LTU(?)SAR
signifying the names of the three Magi (Caspar, Melchior , Balthazar). The names of the Magi were invoked as an amuletic charm throughout the Middle Ages.
The inscription on the band seems to be complete, though, occasionally, it can terminate in an additional phrase (such as ‘in God is all’). The band is …

Early Saxon escutcheon plate and suspension ring from a vessel, perhaps from a hanging bowl, but more probably to hold a drop handle.
Incomplete silver escutcheon plate expanding from a transverse break to form points to either side before inward curving shoulders which continue smoothly to form an integral loop which has a wide D-profile longitudinal median groove and is turned outwards to meet the front of the plate. The front of the plate has a median longitudinal arris and the reverse is slightly curved to fit the vessel body. There are traces of green copper corrosion on the…

Description: Two fragments of an apparently silver mount, probably from a vessel. The mount is made from thin silver sheet, and consists of a long corrugated band with a scalloped lower edge. Four pendant scallop shapes survive, two still attached to the band; each one has a punched aperture of diameter 1.4mm, probably for attachment to the edge of the vessel.
The larger fragment retains part of the straight band which is decorated with five parallel ridges apparently pressed from the back and with hollow reverses; the central ridge is broader than the rest. One end of this band …

An incomplete incomplete finial from a silver tea pot lid, of Late Georgian to Victorian dating (AD 1750s to AD 1900s)
Approximately 90% of the finial is present, with the base and most of the body present. The top is incomplete.
The finial originally had a biconvex body with facetted sides (creating a hexagonal shape), with a similar hexagonal base. It was originally hollow, but now contains soil from the burial environment. A casting seam is present around the middle of the body. The base appears to be have been made from a separate piece of probable silver and soldered to the…

A cast silver handle, probably a horizontal handle from a vessel of 18th century date. The openwork handle is of roughly triangular form with rounded projections at the three corners. The frame is formed of rounded foliate shapes; the latter are divided from a apir of addorsed central scrolling forms by eight apertures arranged in a circular form. From the centre of the attachment side of the frame emerges a collared projeciton on the end of which is an integral rivet. Attached to the rivet is a small fragment of sheet silver, perhaps the remains of the wall of a vessel.

The attachment points are still visible on the side of the vessel as are the marks attachment on the handle itself. originally it appears to have had a flat base with fluted sides above below a scalloped border, above which is a border of stamped with groups of seven pellets in a circular arrangement, probably an approximation of a sexfoil. above this the vessel extends into a plain borde…

Treasure referece 2018 T367: silver possible vessel mount fragment. A curving fragment possibly from the rim of a vessel or a vessel mount of estimated rim diameter 70mm; this might be apt to decorate the mouth of a drinking horn. The rim is flat-topped, and there is an apparently internal rim along the base of the fragment, where it appears to have been neatly cut. Both ends of the object are torn, probably in the course of the translation of the object to bullion.
The object has no dating evidence itself, but is from a known Early-Medieval productive site and is probably evidenc…
