A cast copper-alloy handle of a sheet-metal vessel for warming ale or water etc. The object consists of a tube which narrows and then flattens out to become a sub-trapezoidal plate. The plate would have been attached to a sheet metal vessel. A rivet protrudes from the flatter yet less smooth face of the plate. This is the surface to which the vessel would have been attached. The hollow would have had a separate, wooden handle inserted, allowing the whole thing to have been pushed from a distance towards or actually into the embers (see J. Seymour Lindsay, Iron and Brass Implements of…

A cast copper alloy figurine of an eagle with outspread wings dating from AD 1725 - 1800. The eagle is portrayed with outstretched wings with its head turned to left; the head and body, including its underside, carry engraved details representing facial features and feathers; at the base of the figurine just above the legs of the eagle is an irregular breakage representing the remains of an attachment feature. An identical figurine can be seen as the handle on the lid of a mid 18th century kettle (Koper & Brons, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam 1986, cat. no. 262, p188) thus confirming the susp…

Fragment of cast copper alloy receptacle. "The Nanstallon brass is most likely to be 19th/20th century given the apparent lack of other impurities and the absence of tin, although this depends on the limits of detection in the analysis. It would not be impossible for it to be part of a Roman brass ingot but the few examples found and analysed have some lead in them. Another possibility would be 16th-17th century but I would expect some nickel and arsenic to be detected." (Dr. Peter Northover pers comm)

An incomplete copper alloy modern zoomorphic vessel or furniture foot. The object takes the form of a three-toed, clawed birds foot. A flat plate projects at a right-angle from the angle, terminating in a break where the edge of a circular attachment hole is visible. Two supportive knops project from the centre and rear edge of the base. The surface of the metal is corroded. The style of the object suggests a relatively modern date and it was presumably part of a set of feet attached to the base of a vessel or item of furniture. Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast and turned rim fragment from a robust vessel of estimated rim diameter 110mm; the vessel body, which is of 3.6mm thickness, increasing to 5.7mm by a break in the vessel wall (see below), may also have expanded in diameter below its rim. The overall form may have resembled that of a chemist's mortar. The rim was square in profile with an upper lip which converges with the outer edge of the rim as it approaches a vertical break in the wall, possibly to enable pouring. The vertical break in rim and vessel wall is a deliberately made feature, though of u…

A Post Medieval to early Modern zoomorphic cast copper-alloy vessel leg, probably dating to the early to late 19th century AD. The vessel leg is zoomorphic, probably depicting a ram, with its head moulded depicting symmetrical inwardly-spiralling horns, curly forelock, large pointed oval ears, with almond-shaped eyes surmounded by hairy brows followed by an elongated snout and long furry neck. The head transitions into one enlarged hind quarter with leg angled perpendicular to its face, terminating in a cloven hoof. The reverse of the vessel foot is shallowly hollowed at the face with…

A large copper-alloy vessel made from sheet metal. This vessel has a rounded base, not suited to being placed on a flat surface, shouldered biconnical profile surmounted by a vertical collar and outwardly rolled rim. Weight is 1225.0g, height is approximately 230.00mm, maximum diameter is 270.00mm and the circumference is 835.00mm. This vessel dates from the late Post-Medieval to Modern period. This artefact has Arabic influences and is likely to be from the time of the Arts and Crafts Movement, AD 1860-1910, so can be broadly dated to AD 1850 to present. It is possible that this vess…

An incomplete copper alloy Vessel of Modern date (AD 1800-1900). The object is a cast and turned base from a robust vessel. The base is flat and the body extends upward and is expanded and appears to taper in towards to rim. The overall form may have resembled that of a chemist's mortar. The rim and portions of the upper body are missing due to several distinct, unabraded, longitudinal breaks. The underside of the base has a projecting narrowed, circular foot which has a single incised circle towards the outer edge. The inner surface of the vessel shows repeating rows of concentric ci…

It is made up of a curved, bent bar, at each terminal end there is a cast round section within which is a hole of diameter 4.8mm, which is likely to have served as the fixing point for the handle. The reverse of the object is flat and undecorated. The upper surface is docorated with two lines which run parallel to the longest edges within which is a beaded decoration. A complete cast copper alloy knob, probably from the lid of a tobacco jar. Probably nineteenth century. Length: 21.0mm; width: 17.9mm and 18.9mm thick. Weight: 10.43g. This hollow knob is in the form of a boy’s head with distinct facial features. The boy wears a cap or bonnet.
