A worn, plain copper-alloy sheet rivet which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The object is sub-rectangular in form, having originally been hexagonal. It has been folded in on itself from the sides before being folded back. The object is particularly corroded on one face with a blackish hue compared to a dark green patina on the smaller folds. Corroded iron remains in one of the folds suggests at the composition of the vessel this was used to repair. Similar examples found in Norwich tend to be found in post-medieval contexts (Margeson 1993, 92-93; refs. 574, 575).

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pouring spout of post-medieval date (c. AD 1650 - c. AD 1750). The front part is tubular (Dia.: 15.4mm, internal dia.: 10.6mm). This emerges from a complicated element which is divided into two. At a downwards angle of around forty-five degrees to the spout is a further tubular element (internal dia.: c. 12mm). This second tubular element has been dramatically broken and is now ragged. Above it is a further element which terminates in a projection of sub-square cross-section. These two elements form a rim around the front tube. The lower part is rounded…

A slightly corroded zoomorphic cast copper-alloy spout probably from a ewer of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The spout is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth; the tube spout protrudes from the open mouth (internal diameter: c. 4.3mm). At the other end it curves through ninety degrees downwards, and expands into a long, pointed neck where it would have joined the vessel (it is tear shaped in cross-section). The head has a moulded nose, prominent, squared brow, and shallow, rectangular grooved ears that protrude very slightly above the head; the eyes are …

A cast copper-alloy terminal collar from a drop handle of medieval date. The small zoomorphic style collar is in the form of a beast's head, probably that of a dog. The forward facing head has a gaping mouth and lines delineating the eyes and eyebrows, behind which moulded and incised sub-oval ears on each side with a central groove. The 'neck' is particularly large and is (hollow) oval in cross-section. This recess narrows towards the animal's muzzle. The piece has corroded and is slightly pitted with a uniform deep grey-green surviving patina. Similar zoomorphic terminal collars can …

An incomplete early-medieval copper-alloy hanging bowl of c. 7th-century date. The bowl has been squashed by the weight of the soil post deposition, distorting its original round form into a sub-teardrop shape. The rim has suffered a number of fractures: three at probable suspension points and a further three approximately equidistantly between these points. In places the rim has been elongated, whilst in others it has been bent inwards. Certain rim sections seem to retain the bowl's original curvature from which a diameter of c. 220mm can be extrapolated. This would put it at the …

A cast copper-alloy fragment probably from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel. The fragment has a trapezoidal cross-section and narrows gradually from its end (W.: 28.1mm) to the point where it has broken (W.: 25.1mm). One face has bevelled sides, including the terminal. The artefact decreases in thickness as it travels towards the break, through a curve (Th.: 15.1mm, to 7.75mm); the second measurement represents a consistent thickness attained after the curve. The object is very similar to one recorded on this database, SOM-769421, and the identification is based upon this oth…

A rim fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular form. The fragment now has a dark grey patina with scratch marks all over. The widened rim (Th.: 6.1mm) protrudes into the vessel. The curvature of the rim suggests a large vessel to which can be attributed a wide late medieval to post-medieval date.

A cast copper-alloy fragment from a post-medieval cooking vessel, probably a skillet. The artefact is trapezoidal in plan and semi-circular in profile. It is decorated unifacially on its flat 'upper' surface with longitudinal grooves towards the edges. In profile the fragment is gradually curved. On most skillets any curvature would be downwards; confusingly on this example this would mean that the decorated surface would not be viewed. It is therefore assumed that either there was unusual upward curvature on this handle or that it has been damaged in the past. The fragment has co…

A slightly corroded and bent plain copper-alloy sheet rivet which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The object is hexagonal in form with a central slot in which a rivet survives. This latter is sub-rectangular in form, having originally been hexagonal. It was folded in on itself from the sides before being folded back. The ensemble has corroded to a mid-dark green colour. A corroded rim fragment of a post medieval copper-alloy vessel, with the copper-alloy sheet and rivet repairs still attached. The vessel itself is in two pieces, with the larger piece containing part of the vessel's rim. The larger piece has two rivets attaching it to the sheet, and the smaller piece only one. The sheet repair covers completely the internal sides of both of the pieces of vessel, and has been hammered over the rim to make a neat fold on the outside of the larger piece of vessel. The pieces of the vessel are not flush with one another, but this could be later movement ca…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy right-angled drop handle of medieval date. The handle retains it terminal collar and an attachment loop in situ. The main horizontal shaft has an octagonal cross-section as a result of bevelling. It has broken before the central knop which tends to be found on such handles. At the corner protrudes a small, angled acorn knop. The horizontal attachment end has a circular cross-section. The small zoomorphic style collar is in the form of a beast's head, probably that of a dog (15.7 by 10.1 by 13.3mm). The forward facing head has a gaping mouth and lines de…

A rim fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel, now sub-rectangular in form. The fragment now has a variable dark green patina and a pitted texture. The widened rim (Th.: c. 9.4mm) has a broadly rectangular cross-section, but curves back round towards the vessel. Below the rim the vessel is decorated with on the inner surface an incised line, and on the outer a horizonal ridge. Insufficient of the vessel survives to suggest the vessel form or size. As such, a wide late medieval to post-medieval date is suggested.

A leg fragment from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel, probably of post-medieval date. The leg is made from three angular columns (creating three ridges running the length of the fragment), which splay out into the foot. The foot angles approximately forty-five degree outwards from the leg (to spread the weight of the vessel). The reverse of the leg is plain and flat, and the fragment is covered in a light-green patina. Similar cooking vessel legs (ones without a collar separating the leg and foot) have been dated to the 16th century (Butler and Green 2003, 138, 165-166).

A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy circular mount, probably from an early-medieval hanging bowl. The flat disc has lost around a quarter of its original surface area to a ragged break at the circumference. It features two perforations at opposing points at the edge which are now filled with the corroded remains of iron rivets. A further perforation through the centre of the mount is clean and appears not to have had an iron rivet. The upper surface features engraved decoration consisting of five scrolling loops with lobed terminals emanating from the points of a central pentago…

A corroded, plain copper-alloy rivet-like object which might have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. It is sub-oval in plan with a possibly break giving a broadly straight edge to one side. On the lower surface there is an integral protruding prong towards this edge whose terminal protrudes to one side and is flattened at the base. Rolled sheet rivets replaced the earlier folded sheet rivets in pot repairs from the late 15th - 16th centuries (Egan 2005, 101) suggesting a possible late medieval to post-medieval date for this piece. It is of a red-brown metal with patches o…

A rim fragment from a cast copper-alloy vessel, now a crude quadrilateral in form. The rim is very slightly widened and bevelled. A carbon residue survives on the outer face and may suggest a cooking vessel. The internal surface is smooth with a dark-green patina. At the edge opposite the rim the side begins to turn outwards before an old break. There is a longitudinal ridge on the exterior. Insufficient of the vessel survives to suggest the vessel form or size. As such a wide late medieval to post-medieval date is suggested. The fragment now has a dark grey-green patina.
