A fragment of a cast copper alloy cooking vessel of Medieval or Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1250 - c. AD 1650). Length 20.0mm, width 19.2mm and 4.6mm thick. Weight 8.03g. The fragment is from the rim of a cooking vessel, possibly a cauldron or skillet. Not enough of the vessel has survived to enable the diameter of the rim to be estimated. This misshapen fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan. It is probably part of the body of a vessel. The undulating outer face has three distinct “lumps” along its lower part, close to one of its longer sides. These features may be casting imperfections. A cast copper alloy mount, probably early Anglo-Saxon in date, and possibly from a bucket. The mount is an inverted drop shape, domed and decorated in the form of a human face. From the back of the upper edge projects an integral lug with a circular perforation at the apex of the loop. The perforation is slightly sub-circular, possibly due to wear along the upper edge from a handle. The head has straight hair depicted by slightly oblique linear grooves along the top of the object. A cast copper alloy highly decorative object, probably a handle from a bronze/ copper alloy vessel. The object was taken to the British Museum where Jody Joy (Iron Age curator) and Ralph Jackson (Roman curator) felt that it dated from the very end of the 1st Century BC to the early part of the 1st Century AD. It is therefore very late Iron Age to very early Roman in date. They noticed that the style is Roman (especially the creature's eye) but the metal working style looks Iron Age. Some similar vessel handle and fitting were found in a German publication, but the best parallel can be…

A cast copper-alloy suspension ring, probably from a hanging bowl of early-medieval date. It is circular, with a slightly flattened but circular cross-section. The outer edge of the ring has a groove cut into it. On one surface of the ring there are three sets of bands of parallel incised lines, set at roughly regular intervals around the ring. The object survives in an excellent condition and have a mid greyish-green, smooth and shiny patina. Very similar to PAS database record No: YORYM-05D224, which was found together with an openwork hook-escutcheon from a hanging bowl. Br…

A piece of thin copper alloy sheet, probably a short length of binding strip from an early Anglo-Saxon bucket. The sheet is roughly rectangular in shape, but two opposite edges (the longer edges) are torn and badly damaged. The other edges (the short edges) are decorated with stamps of incised double rings, the stamp probably held at an angle to produce a dot and crescent motif. Two holes have been punched through the plate, one smaller than the other, both off centre. The plate is a mid brownish-green colour.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel leg of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1250 – c. AD 1650). Length: 35.1mm; width: 31.8mm; thickness: 17.1mm; weight: 63.51g. The fragment is ‘D’-shaped in cross-section throughout its length, convex at the front and flat at the rear. It has an old transverse break at the smaller end. The opposite end also seems to be a break but it has a large lump of copper alloy corrosion at one side. The surfaces are corroded overall and on the rear face is a small deposit of black substance which may be consolidated soot. Cast cooking ve…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1250 – c. AD 1650). Length: 35.1mm; width: 37.2mm; thickness: 3.9mm; weight: 20.39g. The fragment is a rim sherd of a large thin-walled vessel. Inside the rim the surface is flat and the outer part of the rim expands slightly to form a lip. This fragment has a matt-green patina overall. On the outer surface just below the rim there is a hard black substance which is probably consolidated soot. The breaks are old and abraded. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of …

An incomplete cast copper alloy miniature two-handled vessel or flask of Medieval date (c. AD 1066 – c. AD 1300). Length: 46.3mm; maximum diameter: 39.0mm; weight: 39.61g. The flask has an elongated neck, oval in cross-section, flaring towards a rounded base. Part of the base and side are missing due to post-depositional break. The neck flares slightly towards the plain rim which is sub-oval in cross-section and measures 21.2mm x 15.3mm. At each shorter side of the rim there is a small handle in the form of a perforated lug which is flat and semi-circular in shape. The circular pe…
