Incomplete copper alloy vessel mouth. The object comprises a heavily damaged, incomplete circle of copper alloy. From the top, the rim of the vessel is smooth, with a very small lip, having been cast integrally as opposed to folded over. There is a straight side to the incomplete cylinder that forms the main part of the vessel mouth; this side is plain with the exception of pairs of parallel, applied dots, located as pairs of two at opposite sides of the object. The base of the straight-sided cylindrical area is encircled by a line of applied dots; below this is a narrow, raised li…

A cast copper alloy figurine bust in the form of the goddess Minerva. The object is in a good state of preservation although the surface is rather worn and pitted obscuring some of the finer details. The face of Minerva is particularly worn but the general mouldings clearly show that she was shown life-like, facing forward with curls of hair visible beneath the helmet along the forehead and the hair goes around the sides of the head. Her nose has been lost, through wear and corrosion. Her chin is delicate and her eyes are basic. Minerva wears a high Corinthian helmet with a large cr…

An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel mount or escutcheon of late Iron Age to Roman date. The main body of the mount is an inverted sub-triangular shape with a flattened D-shaped section and a rectangular projection from the upper edge. The worn remains of a loop project from the upper corners of the rectangular panel with a slight backward curve. Each tip of the triangular body appears to be broken suggesting further elements projected. The reverse of the mount is slightly concaved and undecorated. The mount is possibly a worn example of an abstract bovine depicted 'head-on' type a…

An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic vessel mount of Roman date. The mount is solid and in the form of a crude or stylised bird, such as a duck. The body is a pointed ovate with a D-shaped section and a central ridge extending longitudinally along the upper surface. An ovate sectioned neck extends upward from the wider end of the body, curving round to form the rounded head with a near 90 degree angle towards the top. The front of the head tapers to a rounded point which represents the beak. No features remain on the face of the bird. The wings and feathers of the bird are denoted by…

A complete copper alloy vessel foot of Roman date. The object is pelta-shaped - semi-circular with a central projection to the upper edge - and is hollow with bevelled edges. The interior of the object is filled with a white material adhesive which would have affixed the foot to the vessel proper. The vessel foot is undecorated on all sides. The metal has a light green patina and survives in good condition. The object is 40.9mm long, 22.7mm wide, 8.1mm thick and weighs 31.2g. Numerous similar examples of vessel feet have been recorded on the PAS database, though none in as fine …

Copper-alloy fragment of Roman patera (or skillet) handle, dating to c. 50 - 200 AD. The fragment consists of approximately half of the flat circular perforated terminus and some of the stem of the handle, which begins to taper and is decorated with two grooves running down each edge. The circular terminus is decorated by a ridge around the central aperture and dots punched inconsistently along the outer edge. Corrosion of the copper-alloy has resulted in a dark-green patina and the surface of the fragment is pitted with corrosion. The edges of the fragment are very worn and jagged. T…

An incomplete copper alloy enamelled vessel of Roman date, c.AD43-150. Eight fragments including a handle, base, and six body pieces were found. A further two copper alloy fragments, also possible body pieces, were found in close proximity though are undecorated and cannot be definitively linked to the patera. The handle is sub-ovate and elaborately decorated, flaring out to either end. The terminal is a rounded trefoil from which a roughly even-sides stem extends. The opposite end of the handle flares again into two wide, integral semi-circular arms which would have joined to t…

Three copper-alloy Roman wine jugs with detached handles. One handle has a silver globular inlay and a figurative motif of cupid placing an unidentified object in a basket. Each vessel was packed with earth when excavated. The vessels are in generally fair condition with a green patina and surviving bronze colouration on the heaviest/most elaborate vessel. The base of one of the vessels is detached and the body has slight damage. The elaborate inlaid handle has at least two cells where silver inlay no longer remains. The vessels were taken to York Archaeological Trust (YAT) for …

Cast copper alloy jug lid of Roman date (100-300 AD). The lid is heart shaped in plan, with two cast projections on the upper side. One of these projections is on top of the lid and is rectangular. The conical, vertical, projection from this provides a method of opening the lid. The second projection is from the edge of the lid and would original have formed part of a hinge. A cast copper-alloy handle, probably from a Roman drinking vessel. The handle is 'knee' shaped, with a leg projecting down from the handle at an angle of approximately 100 degrees. The handle appears only to have been attached to the vessel at one point, at the top, where it has a smooth, slightly concaved back which presumably rested against the vessel. There is a break above this, probably where the means for attachment was positioned. The leg of the vessel is sub-circular in section and curves, inwards, towards the vessel wall. It terminates in a zoomorphic head, probably intended …

A cast copper-alloy object, almost certainly a Roman vessel mount. The mount is sub-circular in shape, and takes the form of a bust in relief, probably female. The eyes are distinctly almond shaped, with a smaller lozenge inside a larger external one. These are set within a slight recess. The nose is wege shaped and points out in relief. The eyebrows are defined by a slight ridge, and in between them is a small circular depression. The face has fairly prominent cheek bones. The mouth is not clear, but appears to be quite small. A complete lead alloy vessel repair (pot mend) of Roman to Medieval dating, probably between 1st to 15th Centuries AD. The vessel repair is irregularl in plan and cross section. It consists of two sub oval 'plugs' of lead either side (sandwiching) a sherd of pottery (now missing). The repair would have originally been 'H' shape in construction, with a central rivet and two radiating arms either side of the ceramic vessel, to seal the hole and repair the broken vessel. Due to the absence of any surviving pottery, it is hard to determine whether this vessel repair is Roman or Mediev…

An incomplete cast copper alloy flat handle from a patera, dating to the 1st century AD (length: 54mm; width: 35mm; thickness: 2mm; weight: 17.64g). A 'patera' or handled pan, known as 'The Staffordshire Pan', cast in copper alloy with elaborate enamelled decoration and a Latin inscription below the rim. The body of the vessel is convex and c.2mm thick, and the slightly out-turned rim has a rounded edge, with an external diameter of 89.5mm. There is a diagonal foot-ring with a diameter of 54mm and an internal ledge cast at c.1mm from the base edge, onto which the missing base would have been soldered. Traces of the solder survive on this ledge. The handle is now missing, but judging from other finds it is likely to have been flat …

An incomplete copper alloy handle from a patera or skillet dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-80). The handle has a flat ended, fan-shaped terminal with a trefoil-shaped suspension hole. The handle narrows as it extends towards the rim and then widens as it reaches the rim, at which point it plunges below into the body of the vessel.
