One of two late Bronze Age axes found. The axe belongs to the Penard group, similar in form to type 910 and 925. The axe is 142mm in total length. The object is unevenly corroded, with the worst corrosion occurring at the end of the blade and on the butt. There are patches of a smooth outer cortex of corrosion, particularly on either side of the septum and near the loop. Casting flashes are clearly visible, but have been smoothed. The axe is thickest at the stop (33mm), and the blade evenly thins to the cutting edge. The blade is 85mm in length from the edge to the stop. A centra…

The object is unevenly corroded, with the worst corrosion occurring at the butt and on the edges of the flanges. There are patches of a semi-smooth outer cortex of corrosion, particularly on either side of the septum. Casting flashes are not visible. The axe is thickest at the stop (29mm), and the blade thins rapidly in the first 20mm from the stop and then evenly thins to the cutting edge. The blade is 67mm in length from the…

An incomplete cast copper alloy unlooped palstave of Middle Bronze Age date (1500 BC-1150 BC). The majority of the septum and flanges are missing due to an old break. Where the break has occurred the septum has a minimum thickness of 6.6mm. The upper edge of the surviving flange fragment is about 8.0mm above the level of the septum. The robust stop on the front and back are almost horizontal and have very little curvature (as viewed in plan). Below the stops there is a deeply cast trident pattern with a downward projecting vestigial mid-rib. The blade is sub-triangular in plan and…

Lead looped Palstave (Narrow-Bodied, Side-flanged Type Class 2 Group 1) with a narrow blade and trident decoration. It has a narrow body, straight sides and flat side flanges which extend from the butt to the blade edge. A matte white skin of corrosion covers the lead surface except on one side where five scratches reveal it as grey and shiny. Generally the palstave appears unused with most angles and edges intact. However one blade tip and one corner of the butt are damaged. There is also an indentation in the centre of the septum on one side. Max length: 173; width cutting edge…
