An incomplete cast copper alloy single looped D-shaped buckle with probable enamelled decoration, (length: 18.5mm; width: 20mm; thickness: 3.5mm; weight: 4.4g). This buckle is D-shaped or sub-oval. The loop is sub-triangular in cross-section, and its front and outside edge are decorated with linear designs, including recessed linear areas, which curve round from the side to the outside edge of the frame and appear to contain probable enamel (white/ yellow and red). Additionally, in the centre of the outside edge, there is a slight incised pin notch or rest, although the pin is now c…

A complete medieval copper-alloy large annular buckle with cast pin attached (c. 14th century). The circular frame has flattened surfaces connected by rounded sides. The separate pin appears to have an open loop. Outside and below the loop is a rectangular moulded ridge with a central transverse groove, located at the junction of the loop and the shaft. The shaft tapers slightly towards the rounded off tip. Diameter: 51 mm Such buckles always seem to date from the 14th century, probably the late 14th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 58 and 64-5). There is a good stratified exa…

Incomplete Roman fitting, probably part of a buckle froma military belt set. Cast in copper alloy there is traces of tinning on the surface. The surviving fragment is sub-rectangular with a curved lower edge and a circular perforation projecting from the apex, which is perpendicular to the main fitting. The fragment is similar to buckles illustrated in Frere, 1984, Verulamium excavations volume III fig 13.94/95. This buckle is military and of Early Roman, pre-Flavian date. Parallels can be found in Grew and Griffiths,1991. Early Roman, c. AD 43-96.

A post-medieval copper-alloy rectangular double-looped buckle, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin, but otherwise complete. The frame is plain, flat and wide, with one slightly distorted edge and a narrowed central bar. Corroded, the frame is 35.64 mm long by 23.83 mm wide. It is 2.15 mm thick and weighs 4.61 g. It can be compared with an example illustrated by Whitehead (2003, 75; no. 462), which he dates to c. 1570-1700, but without giving archaeological evidence in support of such a date.

A copper alloy fragment of a Roman military style zoomorphic buckle. A little less than half of the object survives. It is 28.5mm long, 27.1mm wide and 8.1mm thick. The buckle would have been in the form of two animal heads face to face forming the frame, and their tails forming the bar. Just one animal from this buckle survives. The side of the bar that would have joined the plate is flat and rough, with file marks visible. The opposite face of the bar is peaked, making the bar a pentagon in section. The bar thickens and becomes rounder as it merges with the frame at the sides and f…

A copper alloy Roman openwork rectangular buckle plate. At one end are four equally spaced hinge loops, the gaps of which would have received the interlocking loops from the buckle frame and pin. The two outer loops are narrower than the central two and each has a decorative groove filed in its upper surface; the inner loops are wider and have a pair of these grooves. Close to the hinge loops are three decorative circular holes, running across the width of the plate, each aligned with a gap between the hinge loops. A cast copper-alloy buckle of probable early-medieval date. As a colleague writing about a parallel recorded on this database (BH-8DA095) notes, the style of the artefact bears strong similarities to a series of 13th to 14th century spur buckles found during excavations in London (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 106; fig. 68). However, the zoomorphic nature of the plate's decoration is very similar to that seen on the 8th to 10th-century Saxon strap-end group (see Thomas 2003). A parallel given an early-medieval date can be found illustrated in Mills (2001, 19; ref. AS11), although the l…

The frame also has bevelled edges and a trapezoidal cross-section. A cast copper-alloy buckle frame which could be Roman or early medieval in date for which no published parallel could be found. The frame is oval in shape and measures 37.05mm in width by 21.53mm in length. It is difficult to see how this frame would have functioned, the sides and one edge have a D-shaped in section (a flat back face and rounded front face) but the other possibly inner edge has a rectangular flattened part with two small transverse grooves across the centre of its edge. This edge is worn and slightly uneven, so possibly it has been modified and could perhaps have ev…
